Good evening everyone; I would like to know how a person creates Trainz Content. I would like to know what shoftware I should purchase and what other items I need to create Trainz with.

Thanks, for any answers.

Do a forum search for G-max and the Trainz Asset Creation Studio to get started. G-max is the 3-D program in which we create our masterpieces (or the stuff I make, if you don't like masterpieces.) Trainz Asset Creation Studio is the shell we open G-max in. It works as an interface between G-max and Trainz.
To get started, you'll want to look around for tutorials. I'd start at Gary's Trainz Page in World of Trainz... http://www.worldoftrainz-downloads.com/~garyp/gmaxtutorials.htm I'd skip the Brick Box Tutorial. I could never get it to work anyway. Go straight to the multi textured box.
For more advanced building skills, try Tafweb's tutorials... http://tafweb-trainz.co.uk/tutorials.html
Later you can do the other tutorials at World of Trainz... http://www.worldoftrainz.com/Pages/Tutorials.htm#TRS2004
Once you get a few items under your belt it starts to get addictive, but the first one is a bit of a pain. Follow the instructions to the letter, stop by the Content Creation section if you get into too much trouble, and have fun.

Would this also include creating steam locomitves too? I am intersted in creating loco's of the ET&WNC Railroad, and would like to know if there is a tutorail for creating a functional cab?

I have downloaded all of the software needed. I just ca not figure out how to create the engine I want. I have looked at all the tutorials, but still do not have a clue. I do not know how to bring trains in to the gmax importer to modify some locos. Can anyone explain to me what I need to do?

hi Dusten

You dont generally import models, then modify. Its a creation process, and it will take you about 6 months/1 year to get to grips with GMAX and creating a steam loco.

Start with the tutorials to get a cube into Trainz, then work on scenery objects like buildings, and progress from there.

Its a long uphill struggle, but well worth the effort to get your own creations into Trainz.

There is a learning curve. Step one do the first Paul Hobb's tutorial on setting up GMAX. Then start with a scenery object tutorial, then move onto rolling stock, after that tackle Paul Hobb's loco tutorial.

These are useful tutorials.

If you can find a group hat is creating the sort of items you are interested in it can help to join them.

Some people find it reasonably easy, many give up.

You can't do that, it's considered reverse engineering and no creator here would want their stuff modifed like that.

It might be worth exploring PaintShed first. It's a program supplied with Trainz (TRS2006) or downloadable free of charge from this web site (TRS2004). It allows you to make relatively simple skinning changes to a number of pre-set rolling stock items. You can't change the mesh of an object, only the textures on its surfaces. PaintShed is vastly simpler (but vastly less powerful) than gmax if you've never done anything like this before.

If you want to learn gmax then the book "gmax Bible" by Kelly Murdock is highly recommended but it is quite costly. As others have said, for most people learning gmax is very difficult and will take a long time and a great deal of perseverence.
