Creating harbours

Good afternoon everyone.

I’ve started this thread in response to a question from begian46 in the Suggestion Boxcar thread which is for registered members only. Rather than clutter up the suggestions thread with details of construction methods I thought it might be better to share some thoughts here.

All suggestions and ideas welcome.

This is the link to the thread in question which registered members only will be able to open. http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?p=899866#post899866

Kurt,

Looking at your images you need to do two things.

1. Extend your water tiles, if they are not already under the raised land areas.

2. Pull, or plateau, the land outside of the breakwaters down to below the surface water level.

I have a few harbours on my Italian route using different techniques which might clarify some ideas on using wall splines, terrain forming, or better still IMHO, a combination of both.

Cheers

This one has raised terrain only and no wall splines.

This one uses mainly harbour wall and a few retaining wall splines on the inner part of the harbour.

This shot shows the outer part where the wall has been built using the added protection of the rocky shoreline . Inner harbour defences generally have vertical walls, outer parts are often much more rugged and eroded, particularly in exposed coastal areas.

I questioned his claim, and thought as you did, that he wasn't manipulating the water and ground enough, but you have expressed it in pictures much more eloquently than I could with words.;)

As the winter months approach, a blustery winter winds with deep snows set in the US ... I look forward to your screenshots that resemble travel agency brochure photos, of spendid resorts, with tropical warm sunny weather !

Hello Casper,

Wow, If I only had your creativity. :udrool: Designing has never been a strong element within me. :o But, I can learn.

Whenever I change something to my route, I save it with an other name.
I will do some experimenting with water and land levels with an older version of my route.

Best regards

Kurt :wave:

Thanks for your kind remarks folks!

@cascaderailroad
I thought you were located in Antarctica somewhere near the South Pole. It’s therefore nearly midsummer for you isn’t it?

It’s getting damned cold here in Europe and the worst is yet to come. The Mediterranean coast is not the warmest of places in winter. In fact it’s not much warmer than the UK during the darker months. The great thing is that we can instantly change that in Trainz!

I've been working on some of my UK stuff recently, but I'll be back on the Italian route soon and will be posting a few shots as and when.

@belgian46
Hello Kurt.

I hope you find the ideas useful.

BTW, you might want to edit out the images in your post. Double posting pix is a bit of a no-no with some members. It’s a bit like watching repeats on TV!

I was flattered by your comments! I’m not sure they are that well deserved, but thank you.

@misterchugg
Hello Ron.

The route is one of mine. Not released. Still a work in progress (aren’t they nearly all!)

Hello Casper,

Your ideas are very usefull :cool: . I only have to figure it out, how to obtain the same result ( well nearly anyway :hehe: ).

Hello Casper,

I have done some experimenting within a testproject and found a method which I will try using with the 3 remaining harbours. The method isn't full proof, but it's useable adding water ( which is placed with a minimum of 4 tiles ) and then placing the splines above the water. By adding a value height and then using height, I have an acceptable result.

For the harbour that I already created for at least 3/4, I noticed by lifting the water level, the water rose within every part of the harbour.

So I will leave the harbour as it is right now.

Best regards
