Creating a new driver (or two)

This has probably been asked before, but I can't find it. I quite fancy having 2 new driver characters, Dave1 and Dave2, who will drive the same carriages at different times. I tried renaming the built-in character Dave to Dave1 and Dave2 in 2 different consists, in Driver Setup, and this has worked fine (they're actually twins, so I don't mind if they look the same). Until I came to use the Trigger Check rule, which doesn't recognise them.

So I tried to create them "properly", by cloning the built-in Dave. I left everything the same, just changing the usernames (in all the different languages) to Dave1, leaving face-texture and everything else alone. But this cloned asset is faulty: "The *.texture.txt file is missing for texture resource 'dave64.texture'". The files look identical to those of the original Dave in explorer.

What else do I need to do?

you cloned a built-in driver which has a packed texture, often a view programs can repair that
TGATools2 or Images2TGA or Asset-X

The alternative and easier is to setup the drivers in Driver Setup in a session.

Once the driver is assigned to a locomotive, you can rename the driver how you wish.

When I've setup portals in the past, I have put driver-name + portal name. Dave + Tilton, for example, or Dave P + Tilton. P = portal so that when Dave + Tilton complains about a problem I know it's Dave from that portal and not another Dave.

Now you mention rename, couldn't we rename the train/loc in the past? really miss that

@John - I did try renaming in Driver Setup, and the new names did appear OK in the run time monitors. The problem was when I tried to get Dave1 to activate a trigger. The Trigger Check rule didn't include Dave1 and Dave2 in the list of names.

@GM - thanks - I will investigate these tools

Okay. That's weird. It must be that the Trigger Check rule relies on an alpha-only name, therefore ignores the number suffix.

GM's method will work. Download the latest Images2TGA from Shaneturner's website which you will need to convert the .texture files to textures. This one will handle the new texture compression used on built-in models made for TANE and up.

a while back made two new drivers with pictures of my son and daughter, changed name to theirs also. Don't remember any problems doing it, or any problems in game.

I tried the Image2TGA tool, and that did indeed produce a .tga and .texture.txt file. At first the Dave1 driver character was faulty, and I couldn't see why (View Errors showed nothing). But after a DBR the faulty tag went away, and Dave1 is now satisfactorily activating triggers. And Dave2 seems to be happy as well.

So many thanks to those who responded. Incidentally, I did try a simple rename to DaveA, but that didn't work, so it's not that numerics aren't allowed.
