Create an Under-pass

Hi,
Here in Melbourne, Victoria we have many pedestrian underpasses at railway stations that have no roof other than a bridge piece for the tracks. I am in the process of creating a few of these stations in gmax and would like to know how to achive this result. In gmax I have made a rough model of one of the stations and when I export it to trainz the underpass still has the ground passing though it. The tracks at the station in question are a ground level so the underpass needs to be below the ground. If I use the height ajust tool in trainz I can see that the model is complete but the ground is then distorted and that looks like crap.

Any help would be great.

Thanks
Kenneth

You could experiment with digholes. I would be more specific, but I can't really visulize how to hide the hole where there should be more ground. I'll leave that to you, but please post a screenshot to show how you get one. :)

BidMod.

Not certain this is possible but BidMod's idea of using a dighole will allow thing to go below ground level. Then make a thin rectangular item with the appropriate sized hole in it for the underpass (to hide the extra blue from the unused part of the dighole) and texture it with a ground cover like some kind of dirt or grass. In TRS2006, textures like that are in the Local folder. Not named so you will have to peek into them until you find one. Don't know where they are or if the are accessible in TRS2004.

I have created one of these underpasses as such but not released it yet as I made it for the layout I am creating maybe I could send you a copy and you could let me know if it fit's what you want, also I could possibly send you my gmax file so you could modify it to sort your needs.:D

That would be most helpful if you could send me a copy of you work the gmax file might be handy to.

Sample of my work in progress

Here is a screen shot of the gmax model. Sorry the pics are so big.

Here is what it looks like in Trainz.

Here is the same shot but using Digholes to reveal the under pass. This looks better than modifing the ground height to show the underpass.

How can I now texture the ground to hide the open hole. Secondly if I use this option how can I include the holes as part of the model so that I don't have to manually place the holes each time I use the station.

Thanks
Kenneth

See here, some tools you can use to cover the dighole.

Have seen these, But would still like a better way of doing it. I could place a ground level surface in my model and then texture it. the only problem is it may not always completely cover the hole, based on the exact position of the station in relation to the grid.

Thanks for your help.

I know the dighole can be incorporated in the model. The only way to cover the whole hole is to make the item large enough to cover the far side of the hole when the item is in the worst possible position. I'd guess 15 meters from the edge would be enough. Or configure the item to lock into a specific position on the baseboard squares.
Good luck on this one. I admire (envy:D ) anyone who can get a visible product out of G-max.

Have a look at 70337:38001 - 38006
They are various sizes of culverts with a dighole to allow the pipe to pass under the track. You could build your underpass in the same way.

A quick test map showing two different culverts under a single track. The same culverts are 25m in the air in the back to show the dighole under them. The ground texture is similar to the culvert shoulders so it blends pretty well.
