Hello guys
i just got Trainz 2022 on Steam as it was on sale. Should I move the install folder to the N3V folder? or somewhere else? i dont see the point of having it connected to Steam but wanted to ask here
thanks
Chris

Without getting into discussions that would violate the rules of the forum. The Steam version requires the Steam client to work and has been modified by N3V Games to comply with Steam's requirements. It is not a standalone installation.

Chris,

I know nothing about the Steam installation, but because Steam controls the installation differently than an N3V version, the easiest way to transfer over your content is to export that from your previous version using Content Manager to CDP files.

Make separate CDP files of each route and session you created. Rename them as they are created because if you bundle a route and a session, for example, you'll end up with "Content-archive" as the name and not the actual name. The other important thing here is, Content Manager will overwrite a previously created CDP with the same name without warning instead of appending a numeric value such as Content-archive01.cdp, etc. Yikes!

Once you've exported your routes and sessions, do the same with your other custom content. You can bundle up numerous assets, just remember to name the CDP files. They can be up to about 1.5 GB or a bit bigger. I'm a bit conservative and keep the size a lot smaller to be on the safe side.

With your content bundled up, install the CDP files into your Steam version.

There's a 100% guaranty that you will have missing content. Right-click on your routes and sessions and choose download to download any DLS assets, and install any and all content available to you from the Content Store located off of the Launcher. There are a bunch of packages there related to previous versions of Trainz including TRS19 and TANE, and you definitely want those. Click on the Purchased tab to download the content. It's also important to check the updates tab in case there are any updated packages available to you.

I may have missed something here and I'm sure others will assist you with this as well.

Steam Client install is fairly simple. You install the client like any other program. Mine is "D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe"

Within that folder is a steamapps folder and inside that is a common folder where all games are installed.

Games are installed in a folder named after the name of the game. Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019

Inside there looks pretty much like the retail program folder but the TRS19.exe has been modified to start the Steam Client if it isn't running. The client must connect to Steam to verify the purchase before the game will run.

Pretty much like other Steam games. I have mine on my "F" drive in F:\steamapps to remove the games from my very small SSD.

I've notice that a lot of hardware reviewers have their library on a external drive so they can just install the client and point it to the external drive to play games to test the hardware.

That's how I run Trainz. My PC has room inside the case, but the case runs too warm for the older spinner drives which I have. To get around this, I put my hard drives in an external USB-C Oyen 5-bay enclosure. This works fine because USB-C data throughput is about the same if not faster than SATA and there is no difference in loading times. At some point, when and if my budget allows, I'll put NVME and SSD drives internally but with the size of our content these days, those drives will be really expensive, besides, I would never go with consumer-grade NVME or SSDs and will use data-center quality storage to ensure longer life and better reliability.

Chris, take your time learning your way around the entire Trainz/N3V/Auran empire. Trust your own instincts first. It simply is a game. No matter how real it can seem at times, which is extremely real, it's only an excellent simulation. The beauty is it's all based around "assets" you can view from the Manage Content choice, second on the Launcher.
