A simple question. How do I convert .jpg, .tga or .bmp files to .texture file?

I saw a post long time ago about this. I guess I need a conversion software.

Can someone post a link to sch a software ?

Thanks.

I must be missing something here. All the files you've mentioned are texture files.;)
What are you looking for?

steamdriver,

Well . . . I'm trying to fix "errors" and "faults" in CMP.

I am encountering a lot of . . .
"Texture 'xx.texture' is missing or could not be loaded for mesh ~ \mesh.im" listing when I click on view "errors" in CMP.

BUT . . . the identical name file IS THERE . . . except in .bmp format and not the .texture format. The .texture format is often used in place of .bmp, .tga, or .jpg.

When there is a "xx.texture.txt" file . . . you can edit this file to look for the proper format (.bmp, .tga, .jpg or .texture). But when a texture is associated with a mesh file, I can't edit the texture file format to load the existing format of .bmp, .tga, or .jpg. All I need to do is convert one of these to a .texture file format and place it in the config.txt file and the error will disappear . . . I think :o

Thats what I'm trying to do.

If its a .tga or .bmp file that works fine for Trainz I don't think there is any real advantage of using a .texture. TRS2009 does its compression thing anyway.

Stay away from .jpgs for Trainz.

There is a way to do it but I don't think it is worth it. TEXTURE image files take up more disk space, for one. All you need do, if the image file is there in TGA or BMP format, is make a TEXTURE.TXT file to go with it. Usually I just copy one from somewhere, then rename it to the name needed. If I need a DOOR.TEXTURE file, I copy another one like WINDOW.TEXTURE.TXT and change WINDOW to DOOR. Then you open this file and change the files referred to in Primary and, if needed, Alpha. Save and done, lots easier.

Hmmmm . . .

2009 does some strange things to assets when they are imported.

One of them . . . is on SOME assets it adds or changes something where the texture map for a mesh is in .texture format.

example :

An asset in 2006 that looked for "body.tga" for "body.pm" mesh . . . after importing to 2009 . . . NOW looks for "body.texture" for "body.pm" . . . INSTEAD of "body.tga" . . . . . go figure  Since "body.texture" isn't there . . . it shows up as BROKEN in CMP.

There are a few other little quirks I noticed too that is causing some commonly used objects to not appear in 2009 because the texture file (.bmp, .tga or .jpg) for some asset never got imported with the asset. They show up in 2006 . . . but not in 2009 . . . then when you look into them in explorer . . . the texture files (.bmp, .tga or .jpg) are missing.

Whats hard to comprehend is . . . it doesn't do it to all the assets . . . just some of them

Figure this one out.

2 assets using the same xx.bmp file . . . using the same "xx.texture.txt" . . . BUT one comes up faulty as "can not load xx.texture file" and the other one comes up as "not faulty" !!

BOTH has identical "xx.texture.txt" file and "xx.bmp" file . . . :confused::eek::'(

Anyone else with this IMPORTING ANOMALY ??

Do not convert files to .texture. Only builtins are to use that in TS2009 assets.

If you are getting that message in CM2 it means it wants the .texture file converted to texture.txt and .tga combo.

A very easy way is to use PEVSOFT 2TGA converter at his website. It will also be included in TS2009 under EXTRAS folder.

It's a no brainer once you set it up.

On the other question I am finding that rather than SOME tga, bmp, and jpg being missing on import, they are there but CM2 is not recognising them. So CM2 reports them as missing. As you say it happens to SOME but not to all. Checking the images in a graphics editor does not reveal any problems.

I have put in bug reports for tga and bmp pointing to examples but while I know there are jpg assets doing this I can't reference to a kuid so Auran can check it out. If you have an jpg example put in a bug report.

Note I'm still in Beta2 while I wait for my DVD so can't speak for Gold version. Similarly we can expect a lot of bug fixes to appear in SP1 next week.

PEVSoftware conversion tool for 2009

Folder ..\Auran\TRS2009\Extras\Third-party Addons\PEVSoft has a program called Texture2TGA_con.exe and a readme.txt file that explains its use. The readme has instructions on how to install this program as a tool into Content Manager so it can be used from within CM2. It will convert all .texture files that it finds into .tga format and also creates the accompanying xxx.texture.txt files required by Trainz. I'm trying it out tonight but already have a question for Auran.

The readme says "To Install this program as a tool into Content Manager, create a folder in the Trainz installation
as follows:
c:\Program Files\TRS2009\bin\CMPData\tools\OpenWith"

My installation's path to TRS2009 is c:\Program Files\Auran\TRS2009\bin\CMPData\tools. I think most installations are like mine so Auran should correct this.

paulzmay, thanks. That helps a bit.

Well . . . it seems that it is BEST not to be doing any .texture conversion.

I guess this is all a part of growing pains. A few favorite assets are not loading due to various errors, but I suppose I can find replacements.

But over all its well worth some minor disappointments to move up to 2009.

Notch 8 ahead with 2009 :)
