Content issues continue to bedevil TRS19

Trainz route developer
I just upgraded from TRS19 Classic to TRS19 Platinum and am now having all kinds of content issues that I wasn't experiencing in TRS19 Classic. The problems seem to be along the same lines as I reported some time ago in my thread at:

https://forums.auran.com/trainz/sho...tegy-causing-major-route-development-problems

The problems seem to stem from either missing dependencies or faulty dependencies reported by the TRS19 Platinum CM. As an example:

Four content items as shown as built-in to TRS19 Classic Edition CM Screenshot:

TRS19-CM-SS-1.jpg

The same four content items as shown in TRS19 Platinum Edition CM Screenshot, which had to be downloaded from the DLS:

TRS19-CM-SS-2.jpg

In the second screenshot all the previous TRS19 Classic built-in items now had to be obtained from the DLS, and these were downloaded from the DLS and turned out, in three of the cases, to be older items which triggered a missing dependencies error.

This has become such a continuing since TRS19 first came out that I have to ask where the quality control to ensure that such things like this don't happen? I am also finding that items that worked with no problems in TRS19 Classic are now being reported as faulty even though I did a revert to original and a database repair on all faulty items. I finally even deleted all these faulty items that I had imported from the TRS19 Classic CM to TRS19 Platinum CM, and then re-downloaded them from the DLS, and still got them reported as faulty.

I am now going to have to spend a fair amount of time trying to resolve all these issues.

To say I am beginning to wish I hadn't upgraded to TRS19 Platinum is a bit of an understatement.....

Those assets from the classic version may be DLC versions from one of the DLC routes like SnC. In earlier TRS versions DLC showed up as built in instead of payware.

Probably need to use the manage content button and update those DLS items with their updates.

Actually those items in TRS19 Platinum did come from the DLS which should, theoretically, only download via the CM the latest updates..........

This is why I don't accept any downloads or updates from N3V with my own TS2019 Classic install. It works just fine as it is for what I use it for and I don't want it broken.

I have all four of those items in my TRS19 Platinum Edition as "built-in" with no issues.

<kuid2:1942:37008:2> Fence_Chain_Link_2_1942
<kuid2:1942:37001:2> Fence_Spiked_1942
<kuid2:1942:37009:2> Fence_Chain_Link_1942
<kuid2:1942:37002:3> Fence_Corrugated_1942

I note that all four items have their kuids incremented by 1 compared to the values shown in your last TRS19 Platinum Edition screenshot. It is a mystery.

pware No mystery, those kuids have come from ECML or Cornish mainline & branches. They would have been updated for those DLC routes. They will not be on the main DLS.

Folks, I can only look at this issue from my perspective as a major 3rd party Route Developer trying to upgrade my existing T:ANE routes to TRS19 routes. N3V's content deployment strategy continues to make this a very tough proposition indeed.

N3V currently has the following TRS19 flavors:

TRS19 Classic
TRS19 Platinum
TRS19 North America
TRS19 UK Edition
TRS19 European Edition
Numerous DLCs

Depending on the version, and the free DLCs you have downloaded for your flavor of TRS19, the mix of content built-in or shown as payware will be somewhat different than some other version of TRS19 used by someone else. Because of the regional versions you are also restricted in what you can use with the version Trainz.

In May 2019 I surfaced this issue of N3Vs content deployment strategy in the following forum post which got a lot of replies (131 to be precise), and this at a time when we were only contending with fewer versions of TRS19, and not the five different flavors we have now.

https://forums.auran.com/trainz/sho...tegy-causing-major-route-development-problems

Tony Hilliam was part of that original conversation and said that N3V would look at the issue and look for ways to address the problem on July 4th,2019. See his post at:

https://forums.auran.com/trainz/sho...te-development-problems&p=1756837#post1756837

Little has been done since then to resolve this issue and now with all the new flavors things have only gotten worse. As of now I can no longer count on being able to download a specific KUID content item version used in my routes because they have been bundled into some DLC or built-in to a specific version of TRS19, but are not available on the DLS. What is in the DLCs may nor may not be on the DLS, and may or may not be the same version of that content item. The DLCs may have a later version not available on the DLS.

As a freeware route developer dedicated to making sure every user can download all needed content from the DLS, I need to be able to ensure that a route that I create or upgrade can be used downloaded and used by all persons who have that major of Trainz. The simple way to ensure this is that the latest version of every KUID content item is all in one single repository - the DLS. Of course, this does not preclude N3V from bundling these same content items up with their TRS19 application commercial package or into DLCs.

IMHO the DLS should be the only universal repository for the latest versions of all freeware content items.

I have never seen so many flavors of a single simulation software product before. Not only is it confusing, but it makes life a lot more harder for those who are 3rd party route developers, such as myself.

As for upgrading TRS19 Classic to TRS19 Platinum: I expected the upgrade process from TRS19 to TRS Platinum to be fairly easy to do. Hah! That has been anything but the case and I have a lot of experience with Trainz going way back. Tomorrow I am going to have to wipe out everything I have in the way of Trainz on my SSD and do a complete clean install of TRS19 Platinum and then download everything once again in the way of content and DLCs to get back to where I was already with TRS19 Classic.

I love Trainz, but am beginning to wonder about the long term viability of N3V given how they have handled TRS19, which is vastly different than how they have handled Trainz prior to TRS19.

Bump that!

Do not let the icons at the top of this post fool you. I have been a trainz user since 2004, but had to change usernames after coming back into the US after being overseas for a time. I operate an extensive, fully custom mile-for-mile route based on a real life railroad. I call it a virtual railroad because it is (was) not unusual for it to operate for periods of 600-800 hours unbroken 24/7. The upgrade to TRS2019 changed all that due to unexpected consequences of the upgrade, reliability not the least among them.

Increasingly, I find the content of the Wiki obsolete or simply not present, the tutorials out-of-date and a myriad of products that present a maze of compatibility and download issues. I also find a LOT of assets (think overheads) that I will never use in any (all) of the products presented.

There is a 6th version of TS2019, The Plus version which I am using. Have had to modify several assets to an earlier version. They have been obsolete from DLS or obsolete built in. The older versions made no difference or problems with the routes which had the problems. Just a bit quirky.

I sometimes find myself wondering if I can set the firewall on my computer to block all updates from N3V since in most cases the updates are as bad as malware with the harm they do to previously well functioning Trainz installations.

I do not doubt your experiences, nor do I dismiss your opinions but my experience of TRS 19 (Classic and Platinum) has been very different. I did have some issues with "obsolete" assets, "payware, not installed" and other related problems after the initial installations but these were easily resolved - "operator error" and not installing all DLC packages that I was entitled to were the main causes. Reliability, again from my experiences, has not been an issue with TRS19.

Your point about a lot of "unnecessary assets" coming with Trainz products (and I presume TRS19 products as well) is not a view that will apply to all users. Adobe products, MS Office and GIMP all come with features and add-ons that I do not use, and probably never will, but that could not be counted as a criticism of those products. It may be a reason for not purchasing but other users may make an entirely different assessment.

The "non-TRS19" part of the Trainz Wiki is largely the work of Trainz users and not N3V. I am assuming that the TRS19 specific Wiki pages are mostly, if not all, the product of N3V staff. From personal experience, creating and maintaining even a single Wiki page involves a lot of time and effort that has to be taken from other activities. I am sure that if more people got involved then the gaps could be filled and the deficiencies removed. Personally, I would prefer that N3Vs small staff be employed fixing bugs and improving products than updating the Wiki.

My opinions only.

The Cotton Belt route has several missing dependencies. Three are play ground items that were updated somewhere to :3. I have the original items, while listed as "out of date" they work perfectly well and without the "show missing" option you never know the difference.

TBH I am concerned at this thread.
I, like many, have spent many months in creating route for others to enjoy. Initially in T:ANE which I now wish to bring into TRS19. I have the UK regional version [build 105096] and am almost finished converting my previously Blue Mountains route from T:ANE into TRS19. There was much tweaking to do in accomplishing this but now it seems there are no broken links [missing dependencies] or missing assets that I am aware of.

So I ask. If I create a route using TRS19 UK edition will it run on any [all] TRS19 editions? Have I wasted months of my time only to find it'll work just for one type of TRS19 [UK Edition] ?

I am at the point of uploading this route to the DLS but now wonder, reading this, that anyone downloading the Blue Mountains route for TRS19 will be faced with a myriad of problems. Everything in this route is freely available on the DLS. No third/payware assets involved.

Would welcome thoughts prior to uploading.
Cheers,
Val.

I do not have the UK or the European or the USA Editions of TRS19 but my understanding is that these versions differ only in their supplied content - i.e. the installed assets. These additional and unique assets are, AFAIK, classified as Payware (or DLC if you prefer). I do have several DLC packages installed in my TRS19 (both versions) and in my TANE and I am able to create routes and session that will work in any version of TRS19 (or TANE made in my TANE versions).

The Caveat. Before I upload a route or session to the DLS I always use CM to check if it contains any payware or 3rd party assets. If they are found then I remove them and replace them with built-in or DLS equivalents. Apart from one embarrassing incident where I did not check (and had to quickly issue an update) this has worked very well.

Cheers pware,
Slowly I become more advanced as time and practice goes by. Got the UK version simply b/c I have no need for all the bells and whistles associated with the full blown TRS19 version.

Personally I do have a preference for the look of TRS19 but feel there quite a few issues associated with it. No doubt the N3V team will sort everything out eventually. Still think TANE has the edge, operating wise.

Will have the TRS version of The Blue Mountains Line uploaded in the next few days. Bit of testing to be done.
Thanks for input.

I have finally narrowed down the missing content items to the following list:

<kuid:487560:24800> Relay Box Universal
<kuid:-25:752> Powerstation
<kuid2:113998:9012:1>
<kuid2:82412:300513:2>
<kuid2:82412:300532:2>
<kuid2:82412:300509:2>

I believe I have downloaded and installed all the free DLCs that came with the TRS19 Platinum Edition which took care of most of the problems. I still had a few missing KUIDs but edited the route config.txt file to decrement the version number (example: kuid2:00000:000000:2 to kuid2:00000:000000:1) of the missing content items. The list above simply cannot be found. One of the items that is missing is basic to many routes and is the <kuid:-25:752> Powerstation. It is not built-in to TRS19 Platinum Edition as it has been in previous editions of Trainz.

The only way I was able to resolve most of the problems was to:

1. Wipe out everything that was Trainz related on my SSD.
2. Download all my content items and routes from the DLS (2200 items).
3. Download from the DLS all the dependencies for the above (6000 items).
4. Install all the free DLCs.

The fact that I have to download free DLCs I really did not want in order to obtain missing content items that were in previous versions of Trainz or previously on the DLS, sucks!
