consists and locomotives

I'm quite sure I'm missing something about this. when I go to choose a route to use and select quick drive it asks me to select a consist. Most consists do not have a locomotive with them!
How do I get a locomotive to pull the consist?
As you can tell I'm very new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have read about quick drive in the manual and it didn't help.

The majority of the saved consists do not have a loco/engine. Using edit route place a saved consist and put locos on it. Save the consist and name it. Now try quick drive.
Or find the route and select create session, add a saved consist again and add locos. Save session, drive session.

Open a route in Surveyor. Then click on the bottom icon on the right side of your screen (the locomotive wheel) and highlight one of the locomotives that appears, Next, click on the track in front of the placed consist and the locomotive will magically appear on the track. If it is a steam locomotive, you have to also place a tender first. Click "save as" followed by "Quick Drive" and then use the controls on the lower right of your screen to run and stop your locomotive (train).
