Coming soon to a Trainz near you...

You are right about gas turbines being seen as a possible solution in the '50s, but the noise factor completely ruled them out for passenger service, I think.

Glad someone agrees with my autotrain guess, but I'm having doubts because it wasn't started until '71, and the consensus here seems to be in the '50s. I'm not so sure about Train of the Future either. Aerotrain is definitely an attractive idea: fits the period, highly innovative, meant to draw traffic away from cars and planes. It's definitely not steam or another streamliner, as steam was already gone by the time the big passenger hemorrhage occurred and de luxe passenger trains were plentiful as well.

Don't you hate not knowing the answer?

Bernie

Overkill is correct about Aerotrain being mentioned earlier. I should have said I was referring to an earlier post and that it was not my idea.

well, i believe that answer has probally been stated, yet the OP, rob, should get his butt over to this thread and either give us another clue or let us know if we are close!:D

If memory serves, the Aero Train was labelled the Train of Tomorrow I and the all dome GM offering later was labelled Train of Tomorrow II.
From the look of the teaser I'll guess Train of Tomorrow II.
Paul.

Based on the description, it would have to be the Aerotrain.

Based on the silhouette, it would have to be a Y6b.

I don't think other valid answers exist.

Well, one things for certain: It's something that I can't afford! Whatever it is, I bet it looks good. I bet it is a diesel(electric) or some other blunder of the 50's. Who knows? It might be atomic power! (need to stop playing Fallout 3 and get back to the Train Game.....)

I agree, it's time to throw a few more crumbs our way and give us a bit more of a hint.

By the 1950's, passenger revenues on America's railroads had long since passed their heyday. Automobiles were fast becoming an affordable option for the modern traveller, and flight was also steadily gaining in popularity.

Like others I believe it is GM's Aerotrain. Clues are: "by the 1950's" "Auto taking away passenger service" "American Railroads" (meaning American train and American Manufacture). On April 4, 1956 GM 1001 Aerotrain made up of 10 streamlined coaches that could carry up to 400 passengers passed through Roseville CA. GM built three such trains to toure the country to drum up business lossed to competition from automobiles, bues, and airplanes. Despite a massive advertising campaign the Aerotrain was not a success. A clue to its not be a success, it needed helper service to get over Donner, didn't have enought power to do it on her own.

Thus my guess is GM's Aerotrain, also the silhouette seem to match that of the Autotrain in my SP books.

50's, America had just about left steam, and the 20th century was pulled by hudsons from the 30's, that's not 50's,

re Mystery Train

From the way it appears to be taking the bend, I am tipping a Mallet.

My guess is U.P's "Portland Rose"
Often hauled by a Two tone grey Challenger 4-6-6-4

The streamlined Hudsons were still working some Twentieth Century Limited trains until around 1953.

Teehee! We already have it!

I'm going out on a wild tangent here, but I'll say that we ALREADY have the engine!

The N&W Y6B. If you compare the train on the front cover of Trainz2012 and then look at the front of the Y6B in Trainz Railyard, it looks practically almost the same - aside from the different running number mounted on the front.

But hey, I'm quite probably wrong. If I'm not... Well, okay I am not correct. :hehe:

But seriously, think about it...

As stated countless times before, the picture has no relevance to what the actual train is. Even if it did, why release something that already comes with the game?

As for my guess, all the good ones are taken. The Aerotrain seems to have been given the most evidence (from what little was given), but I don't really see a reason for one being put into Trainz. At least, not as a 1st-party payware pack.
