Coal mines and helpers

I was wondering if an empty coal drag has helpers before it arrives at a coal mine to load, or do they come from a nearby yard once it's loaded and ready to go?
Has anyone figured out a good way to get the a.i. to cooperate with an automated helper loco(s) scenario? How do you accomplish this?

I have seen youtube videos where small mine tipples in Kentucky? depend on the arriving engines to do the loading.
