Catching Up on Things

Howdy Folks,

I've been popping in here on the forum every now and then more recently in the past year. I've noticed alot of the familiar faces have dissapeared, haha. Anywho, some of you probably know I took a leave of absence due to my prior computer just not being able to handle the newer Trainz items. About a month ago I got a decent PC with a big ol' 23" 1920 x 1080 monitor with 5:1 surround sound, so needless to say, I'm interested in getting back into the Trainz content creation side of things again. I'd like to know what is the most current version of Trainz that is the least buggy and can handle prior versions of Trainz without fuss? I know most of you are thinking, "Just go on the product page you bloody moron" but I want to know from my coleagues on the forum. Is there anything new and exciting payware wise that is of special note? I've heard various things about the DLS having new policies or something along those lines? Also, I noticed a few pieces of New Haven equipment that have been released during my absence, and quite frankly, I'd like to shake the creator's hand. You have made some wonderful pieces representing a wonderful railroad, keep up the good work. I have a very broad collection of New Haven diagrams and would love to work with you sometime on creating some more items for the NH. And if you read this Zorronov, the Hudson Route's looking good as ever, I've making sure to keep myself updated with your beautiful artwork. To everyone else, I look forward to reconnecting with the community and meeting the new folks here. My first project once I get back in the saddle will be to finish my Highland Valley upgrade/New Haven theme (to those of you who are groaning "not this again", get over it; to those of you who are happy with this, thank you). Oh, and Leader, please say hi sometime and let me know how your route is comming along, it has been far too long my friend. Now hopefully Gandalf will allow me to resume my possition at TCR, haha.

Don't mind me, it's just good to be back folks

Currently trainz 12 is out. Now I know what your thinking its got bugs for a new version, well to tell you the truth it really runs very good for a new product. If you don't want to trust it trainz 2010 is the next best thing and can run content 2006 trainz content however I suggest fixes errors with trains so there is no problems.

Also in other news if you been gone for a long time there is a clean up on the download station that is making all content work error free in trainz 10 which by the way, trainz 12 can run things that are error free in trainz 10 fine.

Right now I think trainz 2010 is running at $40.00 us dollars trainz 12 is $50.00 us dollars

Personally, I would go for TS2010. It's lower priced (as Beattie said) but It also has one thing TS12 doesn't: compatibility mode. This allows you to run your older content (that can and most likey WILL have errors) while you work on fixing them (or, if you're lazy like me, to just run them without fixing them:hehe:) TS12 does NOT have compatibilty mode, so, if you want to run older content, you have to fix it. and some of that fixing can be tedious, requiring multiple additional programs and hours of work, hours you could spend building and running in trainz. Personally, Fixing assets doesn't mesh well with my high-volume, impulse-driven downloading style (i've downloaded so much the game doesn't even know how much is in it, lol:hehe: :o).

really, i'm not sure you'll get a good impartial answer from this, as each member will surely vouch for the version he/she runs. it depends on what you want really, more than anything else.

Hey, good to meet you. I think you'll find opinions on the "best" version vary as widely as favorite locos. Here's what I've gathered from the forums and some of my my own experience.

TS2009 is favored by some because it's modern, up-to-date. It is essentially TS2010 without the Speedtrees.

TS2010 introduced layers and Speedtrees, and multiplayer with a beta patch. Seems like half the folks love Speedtrees and half hate them. ST should, at least in theory, offer a performance boost since they are processed primarily on the video card, but YMMV. However, TS2010 and later allegedly replaces older trees with Speedtrees any time you import a route and you cannot disable this option. I have not verified how true this is.

TS12 - adds multiplayer. Same rule applies with Speedtrees. I find it to be the more stable than TS20120, especially considering it's only been out for a month and a half.

It has been a really damn long time since I last checked in here.

I was rather surprised to see Trainz 12 on the Steam front page today by chance. I had given up on the series after buying 2006 and even throwing a monster computer at it for the time, I still got like 10 fps. This was in contrast to the older days when 800mhz ran the original Trainz easily 30-60.

Please, someone tell me things have changed since then?

Edit: Ouch? Forum reset? I lost my Krok and everything :(

The forum reset back in November of 2006.....surprised you didn't notice it when you logged in on Sept 2007. Obviously things would have changed over these past years since then...

You are hired dear sir.:p

TS2010 is the best all around version of trainz. Can use 90% of the older stuff without a hitch because it has compatibility mode, as well as native.

TS12 is good if you want to add virtually nothing else to it and just run it as is.

Steam's probably worse than ever judging by what I've read and heard. But I hope you enjoy the forums now. Most of the folks seem nice enough. I'm a member of over a dozen, and this is one of the better-behaved ones. :)

Thanks everyone, my appologies about the late reply. I work full time in the service department for a New Holland dealership and it's hay season so I've been b-u-s-y. Ed, great call on that copy of 2010 on eBay, I've got mine comming and have found some great payware. In a few weeks I should have some screenshots of my new work.

Actually, while I have a free minute, here's a test of your memory Ed... around the time when Classics first came out you made a skin to make the NH FL9 look closer to proto. I don't reckon you happen to have that laying around somewhere?

I knew you'd be back someday...
