Catch 22

My Virus scanner claims there are problems which must be fixed but when I click on fix I get a message that says the files cannot be fixed due to an (unspecified) error! Meanwhile my stored favorite website links cannot be found and I cannot download anything. I've tried downloading both IE7 anf Firefox 3.0 but nothing happens after clicking the download button.

Know of any way out of this quandry?

Jim:

Have you tried running your anti-virus scanner in Safe Mode? Sometimes virus executables and the like cannot be removed because they are 'active' in normal running mode. When you go into Safe Mode, they are inactive and subject to removal.

Email me if this doesn't help.

As I recall from when I picked up a trojan, you need to first disable system restore, and then open the computer in safe mode and run your antivirus program. When done and the virus or trojan removed, restart in normal mode and re-enable system restore.

How do I disable Sysem Restore? I can find no such option. Just going to safe mode and trying to fix the problems didn't work.

Fellas,

I found out how to turn System Restore off and how to get to Safe mode by doing Google searches. Did both and got the same result. Would add screenshot but can't get Imageshack to work. Thus far its been two days of nothing but frustration. By morning I suspect there will be a computer in my trash barrel.

Hello Jim
Try downloading and installing "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware". This program picked up some malware on my system that Norton and Zonealarm missed. If you cannot download it then I may be able to email the installer to you. It is 2.08mb in size.

Regards

Phil

The only completely safe way is to reinstall the operating system. Then since it's probably something you picked up from a web site that itself may have been hijacked use Firefox 3.0 with an add on called noscript.

All

I have things partially working. I did need to reinstall Windows XP. Unfortunaltely, the copy I had on disk (which came with the computer) was older than the version on the computer so I needed to uninstall what I had first. I am now working with XP SP1 and IE6 and need to upgrade. I lost significant data in the process including all my gmax and TRS work over the past few months. At least I'm back to having a working computer.

Normally if you create a partition of say 30-50 gigs for the operating system then put everything else in a different partition then if you need to reload the operating system you still have the data on the second partition. I use three physical drives and back up things like Blender and GMAX sources from one to the other.

Run windows update and it will bring you back to XP SP3.

Thanks John

I'm back to XP sp2 and IE7. Think I'll leave things alone now except for trying to get some of my programs back.
