What is the history/heritage of CP's route between Chicago and Detroit?

I'm not sure of the date of initiation, but the CP operates between Chicago, IL and Detroit, MI on trackage rights, apparently mostly over the NS, but also over CR and CSXT. I'm not an expert on this, but I suspect, looking at the map, that the general reason for the rights agreement is to facilitate traffic moving between the former DM&E and ICE & Detroit.

Yes, I should've known better than to trust Wikipedia. The only maps I could find from CP themselves dated to the 19th or early 20th century.
