Can trainz 2009 run on a low end desktop / laptops?

The computational power of the graphics is usually the major obstacle and with most portables it's impossible or extremely difficult to upgrade the graphics processor.

Obviously small, simple layouts with only a few short trains will run better on low-power computers than more complex layouts and activities. Multiple copies of the same item have far less effect on performance than one each of different items (twenty coal wagons is better than twenty different wagons, etc).

Depends a lot on how accepting you are of performance compromises. And arguably more important than procesor speed is memory, and the graphics processor. Set the sliders to minimum, and with 1 Gig Memory and an above entry level recent graphics card, and you should get away with it. However Trainz is pretty 'open ended' - you would still have problems running some of the content intensive routes.

I run a six year old 2.4 P4 with 3 gigs of dual channel memory and a 3850 graphics card. It runs simple stuff not too badly but more complex routes really need something better.

I am running 2006 on a recycled IBM P4 at 3.0 GHz and 2 GB 0f DDR2 memory and XP SP3. Graphics card is a Nvidia NVS 295 with 256 MB onboard. Frame rates on the built in routes including the asset loaded Toronto Midlands circa 1954 ranges from 15 to 30 fps. This setup gives me smooth running, very good draw distance and more than adequate detail. It can be done. Surveyor also works well with no crashes or other problems.

Keep in mind that when Trainz came out typical systems were 1Ghz with .5G of RAM and a truly abismal video card. As Trainz evolved it's needs did not increase with the posible exception of RAM. See my mildly upgraded 2002 vintage system below.

it's a low end laptop i guess :

Intel Centrino 2 P8700 at 2.53 GHz ( 1066FSB )
Nvidia Geforce G105M

4GB DDR-2 Ram

Trainz should run on that too easily and quite well. That laptop is far better than anything I have, including the one that cost me about a gand and a half (And you can count on one hand, how many times its actually come out of the bag, let alone used it.)

Interestingly, most of the performance issues isn't TS itself, but 3rd party content, try some of my 20k poly a car units and make a 12-car train out of them. The perfomance should dip considerably.

laptop for TrainZ

Recently purchased a Toshiba laptop L500 and it loaded Trainz2009 okay, It took a day to patch the SP2 and then I copied the "local" file from my desktop (took awhile too). But the system has taken, There is a slight problem with the laptop supporting two video outputs. This probably could be adjusted the ATI drivers. It is running Vista, pretty well. If I run into difficulties, I'll post it too:D

If you are running on a laptop be aware that Trainz runs the cpu at 100% which can lead to overheating problems.
