Can I get Trainz on my PC?

I had a similar issue installing OS X 10.8 on my HP, the included western digital drive temporarily became unresponsive. A few scrubbings later and it works just fine, but nobody knows why it happened. Even WD is puzzled (I'm looking to replace it though, I despise WD drives with a passion).

That was a weird one! I've had issues too with WD drives myself. I once had to build a RAID for a proprietary system. The drives sent to us were WDs because that's what the customer insisted on. The drives didn't fail right away but would suffer from sticktion because they ran hot and the lubricant stuck the heads to the platters. Every Monday the user had to power cycle his external box until the drive unlocked and then everything would work. When the drivers finally died, I replaced them with the then good Micropolis drives. This was long before they deep-sixed themselves and were still server-class and quality hard drives. That system was still running 6 years ago, and this was built over 15 years ago, the last time I saw it in operation.

Over the years, I've seen all kinds of odd things with components. My former manager brought his kids computer in for me to fix it for him. The hard drive had died. It died alright - it sounded like a PCC trolley pulling into Park Street station in Boston when I powered up the system.

Have you tried switching from Open/GL to DirectX in the Options? That can make a big difference too. ATI cards, especially older ones don't like Open/GL so much and run better with DirectX. The fact that you are getting BSODs concerns me. I suggest that you run some diagnostics on your computer. The drive could be failing, or your memory is bad. Also clean your PC of any dust and dirt as that can cause CPU overheating, etc., which leads to BSODs.

Regarding running... Don't bother with compatibility mode for XP. Instead use run as administrator. XP Compatibility mode does weird things, for a lack of computer terminology for that.

John

Tried both of them. I do nee more RAM though. The drivers are up to date. There's no support for the video card.

ATI /AMD's legacy driver support is pretty abysmal so a 4 year old driver is probably as good as you will get, Nvidias is a lot better although they do withdraw support eventually.

However mention of Drivers caused me to remember something relating to dxgkrnl.sys blue screens, so went for a Google refresher. Have you got any third party CD or dvd related software or anything like alcohol % or Daemon tools or any form of DVD / CD drive emulator installed. The problem is often related to an incompatible driver, used by several of these programs, afc.sys. Should be something relating to it in event viewer if that's the cause, if it's there it can cause a BSOD dxgkrnl.sys error.

If not that look for anything in event viewer related to old drivers and check there isn't something odd in device manager.

I don't know what I'm looking for in Event Viewer. Lot of data in there.

These can be a bit confusing.

In the Event viewer, choose Windows Logs.

In particular, check System and Applications logs.

Anything that has a red ! is an issue. Warnings related to network, logging in, etc. can be ignored, however, if you see mention of ATI or drivers, those are the ones with problems.

You can save the log to disk. If you'd like, PM me and I'll send you me email address and take a look at your system logs for you. I'll report here what I see so everyone working on this for you will have a look and possibly ideas.

I've just ran T2006 and got a diagnostic. Then I started the application and got a bluescreen. After a reboot I went into Event Viewer and the only thing that turned up was ATIKMDAG.sys.

I didn't think any version of Trainz would run with just 1GB of memory. About 4 years ago I tried to install Trainz 2006 on a 10" Advent PC and all it did was crash.

Ken

I run a Toshiba Satellite 105, Vista, 32 bit, 2GB RAM, that has a 1.73GHz Intel Centrino Duo (Integrated Grapics Open GL), and it runs TRS2006, but no Trainz versions above that, as it is a low end laptop.

Older Trainz Trainz versions need at least 2 GB RAM, and newer versions of Trainz uses a maximum of 4 GB RAM

I'm going to get some memory nxt week some time. I'll repost here on testing.

TRS2006 Trainz Railwayz, Full Version, by Merscom, requires no SP patch, and comes ready to use at build 3337, and runs @ $15 on EBay (watch out for unknown sellers, with no previous reviews). There are also some TRS2004 versions. If you buy a disc that as been previously registered by some one else, you can not re-register the used disc. Make sure it is a factory sealed, virgin, disc.
