Built this today for a mate of mine

Tanvaras

Retired old fellow
Hello all,

I own an IT business and had a mate wanting a new Flight Sim PC that would blow any Flight Sim program out of the water and he had the cashola to do it (Mates rates : IE sold to him at cost). So we went for it and this is the outcome. Mind he has some cable management etc to do, I just setup the monitors and built the PC. He also has a flight sim/Racing Cockpit setup, Hotas Warthog flight stick and throttle assembly, and a few panels bought from some Flight Sim stores.

Sorry for poor quality of pics, taken via my HTC phone.

All for Flight Simulator X - I had a blast doing some orbits of my local area in a P51D and a Cessna T210 all in full HD.

This system doesn't raise a sweat running at max settings with more payware scenery and aircraft loaded in than I have ever seen. CPU runs at 8C on load, which mine did that hehe. Time to upgrade to liquid cooling for mine after seeing his staying frosty.

Cheers

Trent

@ Mick, yeah mate I am very impressed by it, So want one of my own now hehe. He is a retired pilot (Small aircraft, non airline) so he wanted the best he could afford. I think we done well with the money available for him, All done at mates rates through my IT business, so I saved him a truck load of $$. he originally thought it was out of his price range when he first checked it all out til I got back to him with "My price for him" and he was like "LETS DO THIS!!!!!!!"

Think that pretty well covers it, I want one now hehe. Time to get better wife faction :P

Trent, that is awesome. I do a bit of FSX and Racing simming (iracing) and I would love a setup like that. Still way out of my price range though.

I hope your mate has orbx scenery for FSX. It is a must.oh and I hope he has Trackir too. :)

Regards

I used to run a business so I know the differences between Wholesale and Retail, but still that CPU has a Street Price of $999 - $1000+ depending on where - quick search turned up the $999 price at TigerDirect.com

WOW!

Yes mate, he sure does, ORBX, OZx, Ants Airports a ton of aircraft, mostly payware Spitfires, P51D, T210 Cessna and the list goes on. The 3 screens and TrackIR work nicely, all set up to only pan once he need to look past the visual area he has etc as well as panning up and down to see more control areas.

@ Cascaderailroad No idea mate, he doesnt use Trainz at all, but being what the PC is I think it would run it extremely well indeed. It doesnt raise a sweat running FSX and DCS A-10 Warthog Sim (He wanted a shooter flight sim, so told him to grab that as well) which looks awesome on the 3 screens as well.

He also has a crazy surround sound system still to setup once the unit is in its actual position (its in his old dinning room being modified to his new gaming room)

I so want to build one for myself now as well, but Wife faction isnt good enough to spend the $$

Yeah, it's gotta be a breeze to run TS12, FSX is a real ****** on hardware and resources - Especially when you start loading in "non default" (ie payware) Aircraft and scenery - addin some real world AI - maybe some Active Sky or similar real time weather.... Turns into a real slide show real fast unless you've got a top notch system.

Many many folks have bought FSX only to reinstall FS9 (it's immediate predecessor) out of frustration.

Hi Tanvaras,

That lot looks as good as a link trainer. Can you blank out the windows and use it as an instrument flying trainer too?

Cheers,

@ Frogpipe, yes mate I forgot to mention he has REX2 as well for Weather and water effects. Truly looks amazing the pics I took dont give it credit at all, but it was taken on my HTC phone. Hope to get my digital SLR there later this week for some good pics.

@ Bill69 - Funny you say that Bill, He contacted me this morning and asked how hard it would be to fully enclose this system to make it more like an actual cockpit, so being my father in-law is a Carpenter and has taught me the skills over the years, we are going to endeavor to build this system into a true blue cockpit around the the frame work. And being he is a retired light aircraft pilot I am sure he will be keen as mustard to do IFR training along with VFR. I know I shall be over his place alot, as he told me he will teach me the ins and outs of all the instruments etc. I so look forward to it all.

I myself am a FSX flyer, but my system is a single monitor with a PC that is at best 70% the capabilities of that one, along with Saitek X52 Pro Stick/Throttles and peddles. But I enjoy it and not an actual pilot so its enough for me. Though I have had a few opportunities to have some hands on in a Jabiru and Cessna 172 which was a lot of fun.

Cheers

Cheers tanvaras, all the best with your endevours. I spent quite a lot of time in a link trainer in my youth, even had an IFR rating at one time.

Love all the high tech gear held in place by good old duct tape - amazing -

No duct tape on anything I supplied, unless he doesn't want warranty :p

Had a fly on it tonight, its amazing how fluid it all is, it does feel like your flying a real aircraft.

Cheers

That would be nice, but he has a static frame cockpit which is quite nice, but yeah having the hydraulics for movement would be awesome!

Nice system and setup!

I have the same case, but not the chip and an Intel mobo with the same amount of RAM. It's too bad that the monitors still have such a wide bezel. Some day someone will figure out how to make them clear or perhaps very thin so they don't cut through the image.
