Building the United Kingdom

I agree that the whole UK by one person is completely unfeasible. I'm using TransDEM to do an 80 mile route and although that takes the topography out the equation, I'm still working on the first couple of miles after over 2 months work.

ECML has been worked on for 6 years or so and the team consists of more than one person, I think its something like 10 people contributing. Why don't a number of us in the community get together and start making the UK? The thing is, there needs to be more than a few people, think hundreds and hundreds...

I shall do my best.

But I can't seem to take screenshots by pressing the 'print screen' button, when I try to paste the image all I get is a big black square pasted.. anybody else got this problem? I'm using Windows Vista.

If you are pasting into MS Paint, as I do, then switching from OpenGL to DirectX might solve it.

I’ve had the black screen with an ATI card and now keep my Trainz set to DirectX permanently. It also solved some problems with the look of the water which had a strange "blocky" appearance .

I must say the thought of April 1st occurred to me as well, but you do sound serious!

I do have a few more thoughts, but I’m playing safe, and holding back just one more day.

I reckon you should be finished by midnight.:D

Today the UK.

Tomorrow, the world.....

Cheers! Thanks for that! I'll get some pics on here as soon as I can :)

But actually I'm thinking, should I buy a newer version of Trainz and start again? Or should I just continue from where I am?

Here we go, my first screenshot of the map overall so far.

This is the Norfolk area..

In the opening posting L1ONHEART explained that he will not build to scale but significantly compress the country. I missed that bit but got it now, with the screenshot in his last message illustrating his approach. The scale he plans is about 1:10. That will reduce the overall number of baseboards by a factor of 100, "only" about 1000 baseboards to do now. But the railway network will become largely fictitious as standard gauge in Trainz remains at 1435 mm and does not shrink to 143.5 mm. This way of modelling reminds me of Railroad Tycoon 2 which I enjoyed to play in the late 90s - as a game, not as a simulation.

Well let's get round to it then.
If you look at the top left corner of this page you will see a tab marked "Register", click on it and it will take you only one minute to register your copy of Trainz, then we can all see that you are a true legal Trainzer.
Plus you will get all the help you need from the members when they can see a registered copy by your name.

I calculated that it will take 859.372 years to finish this project...unless you plan to compress the country onto one baseboard, that is.......WELL GOOD LUCK MAN!!!!! :D

LOL.

I don't fully understand all these scales you can choose from before starting a new layout, can anyone explain? There's a window that comes up after you select 'create new' in the Surveyor menu, asking you to give a name for the route and stuff, then it asks what scale you want it. Does anybody know what each scale means? Please :)

P.s
I'm going to register my game now..

In baisic terms you can make it like a model railroad and I think have the measurements to that particular scale. Also You are Serously going to make all of the United Kingdom in Trainz 2004?!?!?! I would suggest a Trainz with a higher memory capacity Like Trainz 2009, 2010, or 12 but it shure would be a great feat to see can't wait:D  um another thing I suggest is to get a team toghter and you would all build the route togher and make the job a bit less of a migrain and a little easyer to build it.

Trainz doesn't have a "memory capacity", your computer does, the route will only run as fast as your computer lets it, nothing to do with which version of Trainz you have.

I was trying to register my copy of TRS2004, I was told to click on Register but where its now telling me to register for an account when I've already got one??

I've just ordered a copy of TRS2010, looks a lot better and seen as it's 2011 now I should keep myself updated! :D

How would I do that? We'd all need to be at the same PC don't we?? lol. Sorry I'm all new to this..

And think how long it will take you to save up for the super computer (not PC)
to run it. You are either having us on or have no concept whatsoever of the work involved in making even the smallest route. Learn to walk before you run.

Well if he sticks to the project, he'll be at it long enough to get the super cray when it comes out for the desktop!

I agree. This is a bit of a project with a lot more enthusiasm than there will be time for. My own route, which is a combination of merger and acquisition, my own hand modeling, and dem files, has taken me nearly 6 years so far, and not even close to completion.

I know people don't like quoted images but thought it might be interesting to see the baseboard count of this alongside my actual size Norfolk route for comparison- it runs from Holt in the north west to Lowestoft in the south:

Started this when 2004 was released and I'm still only about 50% done! If someone were to model the Breckland line it could link up with the ECML someday...

WOAH! LOL. That's quite a significant difference.. :D

Well, the width of my county seems to have been compressed to just 12 baseboards, judging by the map - which is a little over 8.5 kilometres or just over 5 miles. I can assure you that Norfolk is somewhat bigger - around 70 miles from East to West.

I have been working off and on (mainly off) on the West Norfolk line from Heacham to Wells since I first started with TRS2004 and even in an abbreviated form (my error) it has taken far more than a dozen boards. So far it consists of correct station layouts only, with very little scenery. Perhaps it will be finished one of these days - but I got hooked on producing 3D models using GMax - including Norfolk buildings from my own photos, some dating back to the 1960s when I was a 'card and glue' modeller. (Anyone remember Seccotine?)

The map of the routes from Holt to Lowestoft is much more realistic - and I would very much like to see screenshots of part of the route.

Hi Ray

To avoid hijacking L1onheart's thread, click on my name at the top of this post and then 'Find all posts by Rumour3'. Most of my recent posts in the UK screenshots thread are from my Norfolk route.

I was born and raised in Cambridgeshire, but one of my regular childhood holiday activities during the 1980s was to spend a week bouncing around Norfolk and Suffolk in Cravens and other first generation dmus on an Anglian Ranger ticket. My route started off as an attempt to recreate memories from that era but I've gone for the present day period (with one or two touches of modeller's license) because it's so much easier to research.
