Building new gaming rig. Any parts advice for this newbie?

Hi guys, I need your help:

I'm brand new at building my own system, and I need some advice. I want to build the ultimate gaming rig, with the maximum amount of processing power, RAM, massive graphics, so on and so forth. I want only top-of-the-line components, and I want you guys to suggest some.

Thank you,

Kerry Freeman, AKA Saphira123456.

Are we talking money no object or something air cooled? The last 10% of performance will quadruple the price.

Thanks John

If you pick up some of the PC magazines, a couple of them of them have lists of suggested parts to build various standards of PC with the best being "Extreme" (Custom PC is a good mag). These parts are all compatible and are the best you can get.
Off the top of my head you could have -
Case - Corsair 900D
CPU - Intel i7 3960X
Mobo - MSI Big Bang Xpower II
RAM - Corsair Dominator Platinum, say 32GB
HDD - OCZ Vertex 240GB
GPU - Nvidia Geforce GTX 690
PSU - Corsair AX860i
Cooling, maybe custom watercooling, if not Corsair H100i
Thats just the basics but the combo of CPU, GPU and RAM would rock.
Overclock.net http://www.overclock.net/ is a good place to get ideas.
Say goodbye to your money!

so here are the latest and best pc components you should go for

CPU -Intel Core i7 4770K
RAM - Corsair Dominator Platinum go for 12 or 16 gb( more then this will gave no more benifit to you so save mony and spend on other component
Mobo - ROG MAXIMUS VI EXTREME
GPU - msi or evga gtx 780
PSU - anything above 800 watts 80+ corsair psu will be enough
HDD -Western Digital 2TB 3.5" SATA HARD DRIVE 64MB CACHE CAVIAR BLACK
SSD- Corsair 240GB FORCE 3 GS SOLID STATE DRIVE
case- well not sure what brands are available there so cant suggest any

Well if its money no object land then actually a XEON processor and ECC memory offer some advantages.

yes i agree with you but such components will only gave advantage in benchmarks only and in performence not much visible advantage so better to save money from here and spend on other parts like a hot case and cooling stuff to enhance the beauty of ur rig
like i own a medium class rig and i paid optimum attention to performence parts upto such extent that i couldn face any lag or problem and spend money that i saved from buying xpensive stuff to the look of my pc

The advantage isn't so much in performance, in fact its very slightly slower but in reliability, you get less memory errors.

So basically the fastest Intel processor he can lay his hands on together with the fastest GPU so start with Tom's hardware

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html note at the top end the price starts to climb.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106.html note again at the top end the price starts to climb.

You want stability in the motherboard so probably ASUS high end, the case depends how much noise you can tolerate, but I'd add in a UPS such as Cyberpower.

Memory probably Crucial cooling air rather than water, water has been known to leak with expensive results. Overclocking possibly but it shortens component life so I tend not to. Monitor tricky call 1920 x 1080 is quite nice but the more pixels you have the more horse power you need so greater than this drops your frames per second, lower than this increases your frames per second.

John has a point about display panel size. For example a 24" widescreen display would have a native resolution of 1920x1080. However you don't necessarily need to run Trainz at that resolution. If extra performance is required, just drop it down a notch or two. For example, 1440x900 or 1280x720 will still run very beautifully on a 24" maxed out with very little image degradation. Ask yourself, would you rather lousy settings at maximum resolution or maximum settings at lower resolution? Frankly, I think with the former you just end up with a crisp, clear, pile of crap.

Of course, if it's a top-end setup then this dilemma wouldn't exist.

Which brings us to the next point. The OP has not specified if he's comfortable buying parts and assembling them himself. Otherwise we can better advise him on prebuilt options perhaps.

Guts are impractical for computing purposes due to lack of computing power and the fact that they are inside people :D

I'm not so sure they have nerves, neurons and such so are capable of basic computation its just the input and outputs that are the challenge.

Has anyone noticed that the one person missing from this thread is the person who started it? :)

Yes that seems to be a common internet phenomenon. I'm sure there must be a name for it?
