Bright shiny wheels

Gary_Evans

Still plays with Trainz
For some unknown (at least to me) reason, the bogeys (trucks) on most of my freight cars are bright white. I vaguely remember a post some time back describing how to eliminate this problem on TS 2010 and TS12. Can anyone help me?

I too have had a dabble in the past of trying to change ordinary wheels to shiny wheels, by changing the bogies, but they either float above the track, or when using different bogies, sink into the rails.

I believe it has something to do with the attachment points on the vehicle, that can either raise or lower the bogies into strange postitions, when different bogies are attached to vehicle.

I am still searching for a way around this, but it is a head scratcher at times, and makes trainz more fun.

Search no longer, it can be fixed by using the position tag in the config, you can use it either on the bogies or the loco's / rolling stock depending on which works best. See the floating Bogies thread here.

Malc:
Are you stating that if we use the position tag info the shiny wheels will disappear?
G

No, Airtime I think misread your problem and was referring to a different problem, where he is swapping bogies for better ones, with shiny wheels, however you could try using different bogies and adjust the position if its wrong using the same method.

Have you tried Pev's IM2PM program? that might just fix your problem as you can run it on an im file and it "fixes" specular problems.

Can you post the kuid of one of the freight cars you are having bogie problems with?

Thank you Malc, your a star, I will give this a go, and I should have more luck in the future,

The main reason I mentioned in my post about swapping bogies, was to possibly offer a work around, until you find a better way to fix the wheels.

I wish you luck Gary Evans in your search for fixing the wheels problem, I hope you have it solved very soon.

Once again, many thanks Clam1952 for your valuable help

The problem is people who don't know what there actually doing try to update the content without realising that it's got shiny wheels, etc and auran haven't been checking them in depth to see if there actually ok. Not that it's there job to the person doing it should've noticed that the bogies were shiny in the first place.

It's all to do with the "specular" effects in the options tab in Pevsoft's PM2IM program. If you don't click that anything that you try to convert appear shiny in the new IM file you create. I had the same problem when i tried to sort out a problem with an asset last year until i was pointed in the right direction by someone. I think you can sort it maybe by clicking "strip textures" as well in the options tab. Which kuid number are the 33x68 bogies your having the problem with ?

The specular issue is caused by old assets made with default GMax exporter settings.

TS2009 onwards use the ambient, diffuse and specular values for a material, where as earlier Trainz versions took little or no notice of these values.

I added the specular colour feature to PM2IM in an attempt to get around this change. Unfortunately it's not always that simple. The combination of the values of the three colour settings is now critical to the successful rendering of the object in the game.

I am reluctant to add any colour change features to my tools because it can change the designer's intent, which may breach copyright. The sole purpose of PM2IM is to repair/upgrade assets; NOT make changes to them.

This one should be solved, see my post above where I posted the fixed screenshot and what he needs to do. kuid of the bogie is in my post.

Kudos to Malc for his very helpful post and criticism to Warbo40 for his condescending note. "The problem is people who don't know what there actually doing try to update the content..." We post notes in order to obtain help with a problem.

As I hoped, PEV has worked his "magic". The new version of PM2IM eliminates the shine WITHOUT affecting the wheel animation. Thank you PEV...and thank you Malc for pointing this out!

Apologies for bumping this thread but I've come across this problem.

I don't know how I downloaded the newer incorrectly fixed one, but I did. Now, the bogey (kuid:45681:50001) needs to be fixed because of the odd shine. The problem is, I cannot fix it with the current version of PM2IM. I keep getting an error message when I try. The older version worked fine, but now I can't do anything to fix the .im file up. Am I doing something wrong?

:(

I figured it out. In the newer version of PM2IM, if I only selected one of the options (either strip textures or adjust speculars, I can't remember which one) when I went to convert a file, it gave me an error saying "ERROR, not a PM file".

It took me a while but I figured it out. I had to select both "strip textures" and "adjust speculars". In the old version, that was all I needed to do, but I discovered (at length) that I have to actually choose a colour. I went with black and that seemed to fix it up. I miss the older version of PM2IM. :(

Thanks for your quick reply Ricke82!
