Bridges, tunnels, and track.

Pardon my abysmal ignorance but I'm new at this.

Is it possible for me to remove existing track from a bridge or tunnel and replace it with a different track, i.e.; from one gauge to another.

I know I've chosen a very limited gauge, (Maine 2 footers), to work with so I expect to have difficulty finding what I need so I may be better off modifying or creating my own assets. I just don't have a clue what is possible or not.

Depends on the kind of bridge (tunnel, etc).

If the bridge is a spline, the answer is no.
If the bridge is an object with the tracks on it, there are two options:
- Try the "replace" function in Surveyor.
- Make your own private copy of the bridge and edit the config file to use the KUID of the track you want.

Note that the first option might not always work and that the second option usually is only allowed for private use so check the license of the object to see if uploading is allowed (if distributing is the final intention of the route).

I've successfully changed tracks in spline bridges and tunnels by editing the config file. Clone it, right click on "Edit in Explorer" and open the config text file. In the list should be a line defining what the track is and an associated kuid number. You have to change that kuid to the kuid of the track you want (so you have to know the replacement track's kuid ahead of time, I just copy it out of the Content Manager entry). Save and close the config file, close the Windows Explorer window, and commit (control M or right click and go to "commit") the clone. I usually rename it in Content Manager so as not to get it confused with the original. Now, what I have noticed is that not all tunnel and track splines have a track kuid in their config files. I am not expert enough in this stuff to know why. And, as oknotsen already mentioned, take notice of the license conditions. If you're just going to use the modified asset on your own personal layout there's usually no issues. If you want to upload it or as part of a layout for others to use later (paid or not), you may need to get permission from the creator of the original, depending on what they say in the license. But once you get the hang of basic modifications, you can really customize stuff for your needs! Good luck!

The above methods will only work for moveable bridges if they are made as kind turntable (and very few are). The vast majority are made as fixed objects (with the moveable part animated). The track you see is parts made in Gmax, Blender, etc. that look like ties and rails. Trains actually cross on invisible track. The reason is real track will not move with the moveable span unless its done as kind turntable. The advantage is if the bridge is open a train won't crash he session (though it will look insane magically floating across the water, lol).

True. I've noticed that with draw bridges both for trains and cars. But I've changed tracks on bridge splines, one tunnel and a turntable. That was in Trainz 09, so I don't remember what they were. It's worth looking at the config files anyway, just to see what may be customizable. And it's pretty easy to change stuff and experiment. As long as you remembered to clone it first, you won't lose anything even if it all goes terribly wrong!

Until you run into a turntable that uses parts to look like track and actually uses invisible track (and yes- I've made a few like that, lol).

Being able to change it on splines and tunnels seems reasonable to me considering how they are made. Perhaps not all but certainly some as you have found out.
