I think the problem here is, Iced8383 is rushing into it a bit. We have here a couple of boards, track with a few buildings or dmdrake's city blocks scattered around.
Before starting a route, consider where the route is based. I myself make more fictional routes with no particular location in mind. This is to avoid making mistakes and gives me the freedom to do as I please without having to be careful about what type of buildings to use, how they should be placed etc.
I also like to browse the DLS to see what sort of content I could use. I tend to go for photo textured content, this makes for a much more realistic looking route. Content creators such as guyader.1, duarn, kilanziom, gfisher, dmdrake have provided some excellent buildings and other things.
When I start a route, it's always with one board. I put a station, buildings, some plantation. This is my starting point and I work my way round it, only adding more boards when I am satisfied I've done enough.
Don't try making a 30 board route in 5 minutes, take your time Iced8383.
