Bethlehem Steel Shortline Railroad C&BL Large Pics

Sorry for being so slow. I would like to take a stab at making both the ingot product and the special cars used to transport them. It seems like it would be a really fun project, I just keep getting overwhelmed. :p

- Madeline

Thank you so much Madeline. If you need pictures or any other assistance from me just give me a PM. As for being overwhelmed, I know exactly what you mean. This is the slow time of the year for my business and this year working seven days a week is not enough.:'(

Please take your time.

Here is a Shot of the C&BL yard in front of the shop.

I was going to enter this in the screen shot of the week contest but the competition is too brutal.:hehe:

More to Come......:p

Sethmcs,

Gorgeous layout! You are an inspiration to us all!

Where did you get the orange crane car in the above screen shot?

That bridge looks longer than it really is from the perspective of the screen shot. Actually, I give up a secret here.:hehe: In TRS2004 in surveyor hit ALT-WALK and walk around your layout using the arrow keys and mouse to find interesting perspectives for screenshots.

However, safety is an important consideration at the C&BL railroad. :p
I'll ask our community bridge engineering expert bendorsey to visually inspect the bridge and follow any of his recommendations as to additional bridge reinforcements.:hehe:

Thank you Gary.

It is a Russian Crane and the easiest way to get it is download from Philskene's thread called "Russians are Coming" here: http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=16034

Sethmcs,

Thanks for the link! I installed all the Russian cranes and they are the best cranes I have ever seen for Trainz!

They look sort of similar to a smaller crane used by the New Haven RR, which I am modeling.

I am following the progress of your Bethlehem route with great interest because I am modeling the large Brass Mills that were once found along the Naugatuck Valley in CT in my route. (My dad worked 27 years in one of the Brass Mills as a machinist.) Although much smaller then the Bethlehem Steel plants, some similar facilities existed in the Brass Mills. My Dad would constantly talk about the foundry, pouring the Brass, the rolling mill, and the Steel Workers Union.

I recently bought a book entitled Bethlehem Steel by Andrew Garn. It has dozens of excellent photos and maps of the steel plant your modeling. If you don't have it I highly recommend it.

Thanks Again for the crane download!:)
Looking forward to your route!:)

That picture of C&I crane is from Cassandrea scrap yard. I am not sure if it is there to work or is scrap itself.:hehe:
looks like it's waiting to be cut up to me. :o and the fact that the rain cap on the exhaust is stuck open, the cylinders are probably full of water, i doubt it ran.

Walking around the coke oven.......

Hi Sethmcs!

Just a question, do you have a release date planned yet?

If not that's OK.

Also, if you need me to beta-test it when you're done, give me a shout. :)

Unfortunately, my business has been taking all my time lately and I haven't had even a day to work on it. The route is not dead. In fact I have plans to expand it and maybe one day release it...no release date yet.:)

Actually, the Johnstown Plant of Bethlehem Steel had two separate coke ovens. One above the Franklin works and the other in a valley above the lower works. Bethelem Steel also had its own coal mines so coal was brought to the coke ovens made into coke and delivered directly to the blast furnaces. In the seventies when I was a kid Bethlehem Steel had six blast furnaces in operation. Likewise, my route has six blast furnaces. The blast furnaces operated day and night and C&BL was responsible to make sure that all materials were delivered to keep this busy plant in operation.

Johnstown PA is located 70 miles east of Pittsburgh.
