Best looking textures

Hi;
I need hi-res real looking textures for a proto route I am working on. I have been trying different ones on DLS, but often they are no better than what I've already got (mainly the built-in textures), and I have to go through the process of testing and deleting the ones I don't like. It's a time consuming (and boring) process. So if anyone knows of some really good looking textures for rock, grass, dirt, water, etc please clue me in.
Note: At this point, I am looking at freeware, not payware. My budget is very tight, and textures are not something I consider worth paying for.

Thanks

Try a painters palette, placing every texture you have on a blank set of baseboards (this may take you several months as there are thousands, and thousands) Stay away from ones that leave a checkerboard array, as they are not seamless.

Possibly someone can help narrow down you search categogry, by naming a top texture creators username.

Actually, that is exactly what I have been doing. While I don't have thousands of textures installed, I am going through those that are and disabling any that I don't want to keep available. I would also like to rename the textures, so that they are grouped by type rather than their given names. For example, all the rock textures would start with the word "rock" so should then appear in the pallet in a group. I wish that after all these years of TS someone would have created a standardized naming system and forced CC's to adhere to it. The problem with renaming the textures on my own is that if I ever download an update for that texture, the name reverts to the original.

With all the enhancements since TS09 I would have thought that TS12 would not have included those older textures, or at least have them disabled but still installed - since textures are painted to the .gnd file, there isn't any requirement to keep old ones around for backwards compatability with older routes.

I can get this pallet thing done without much fuss, while listening to music or an audiobook on my iPod, so at least I can tolerate the boredome of doing it :)

McGuirrels Ultratextures are very good, also try the Scottish textures by user masontaylor . These are seamless, very fine grained and blend well together - they also make good distant hill/mountain blanket textures.

I have a good collection on AMTZ. Sadly due N3V's uploaders license I cannot upload them to the DLS. But they're there on AMTZ for anyone to use.
