Southern Railway 630

My favorite #3. I've racked up more miles behind her than I did behind Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum's 2-8-0 #610. When 630 was running those two excursions out of Bristol, Virginia, I considered going up to my Grandmother's house and staying the weekend there while I rode behind 630, since my Grandmother lives about a half-hour to an hour south of the Tri-Cities (Kingsport, TN-Johnson City, TN-Bristol, TN/VA). Many, many memories of going to her place for either Thanksgiving or New Year's Eve. Don't tell my Mom, but my Grandmother's sweet tea is better.

She sure is a beauty and your memories are awesome. This engine has all the lines of a classic 2-8-0 that anyone would expect to see. The Boston and Maine and Canadian National used to run locos like this as well. I missed them by a few years, but I've seen pictures of them.

The CN locomotives like this ran from Montreal and Halifax to Portland Maine.

The B&M used them for freight and passenger service.

I can see why!

I love the Alco on the right sitting next to the E-unit.

I wish they still had trains like this too. Today we have generic looking rectangular boxes.

I don't know about you lot, but this has to be one of the prettiest paint schemes on a modern shortline ever. Add the fact it's on the side of an ALCo RS-3, fitted with a Hancock Air Whistle no less, and it makes this unit one of my favorite Diesels today!

Oh, and those finnish steamers are rather gorgeous too!

BEHOLD... the Belgian classs 64, which is actually a Prussian P8 with a bit of paint. But, I do love it!

And, back under steam since this summer: Mallet 403 from the Vivarais-railway in France, back in its original black livery!

Taken a recent interest in vintage Melbourne trains. Here's a fine example, the Hitachi Stainless Steel metro train with her clean lines, fluted sides, minimalist and utilitarian design. Reminders of a bygone era; we're now in a time where not a single industrial designer can resist adorning their hideous creations with rounded plastic wings and giant smiley bumpers.

A few noticeable omissions that haven't popped up in this thread yet:

The North Eastern Railway A2 (not to be confused with the much later Peppercorn A2s) Pacific, designed by Sir Vincent Raven.

North Eastern Railway EF1 Bo-Bo electric. Simple, functional, and powerful-looking, despite it's somewhat diminutive size.

Just because the trains are in nice colours does not automatically make them pretty. Most of them look rather ugly and well kind of clunky wit no style. Talking about the diesels rather than the steam.

I think being ugly and clunky, in a way, makes a locomotive prettier.

I agree, sometimes a locomotive looks strange/clunky to me, not pretty, but I still like it. for example, the BQ23-7. It is one of the weirdest trains I have ever seen, but I like it.
