Be careful of System Restore

Crabby Old Geezer
I recently did a "System Restore" and even though it was only a few days back, it "renamed" some of my Trainz files (in the Local folder) and I lost some of my repainted locos and stuff. Like a fool, I didn't write the names down of these renamed files, so I don't know what they were. Just a tip.

Excellent warning,

but don't you have a separate back up of your Trainz installations?

That's part of the problem with having Trainz on the same partition as Windows. Also, as Ed (Euphod) said, having backups of your downloaded content, or at least the local folder, is a very good idea.

Personally, if you have the money, and can get it done, I would recommend having a second hard drive in your system, and run Trainz off that. It would help the performance of Trainz, and if the system is set up correctly, (ie System Restore is set t the C drive only), a System Restore won't affect the Trainz installation.

Can you run Trainz totally off an EXTERNAL hard drive? Pardon my ignorance, but I'm just not that computer literate!

Yes certainly, provided you install it there. Don't try moving it after it's been installed though, that usually ends in disaster as it does with most programs.

John

By "moving" what exactly do you mean? Like, UNPLUGGING and relocating the external or trying to move the program onto another drive?

I mean moving the post-installation files with Windows Explorer, say from within C:\Program Files to E:\. Changing the external drive's letter will probably also cause trouble. Doing these things will break the Registry entries for the program.

While in most cases moving the post-installation files will be a disaster, for reasons I don't understand some people have reported doing it and getting away with it. Maybe they've got some software installed which monitors the movement and adjusts the Registry entries automatically???

Obviously physical movement of a hard disk while in operation is risky in a totally different way.

Hard drive

In a recient post (partitioning hard drive) there was there was a discussion about external hard drive giving severly decreased performance in Trainz if the program is installed there. See that post also.

Performance significantly decreases because transfer speeds using either firewire or USB2.0 will still be slower than SATA, SATA2 or the older IDE standard. Also, external hard drives have slower speed than 3.5 inchers.

Cheerio,
Nicholas.

Sometimes, the computer can be a pain when playing trainz. My computer is five years old and trainz runs fine, except when I had TRS2006, I think it renamed some of the files.

I had compressed my TRS2004 and TRS2006 folders to a DVD as back up before my computer died. I then transfered and decompressed them to my daughter's computer not expecting them to work since they had not been "installed" on hers, so I expected registry problems and such. Nope. No problems. Both TRS2004 and TRS2006 and all the downloaded stuff and my stuff worked. A bit slow due to on main board graffics, had to use 800x600 but they worked.

As for system restore, It has saved my posterior 4 or 5 times over the years. It never messed things up for me.

A bit convoluted I know, but couldn't you 'undo' the restore. Then you could either note down the names of the files,or better still, back them up to an external source such as a DVD. Do the restore again and re-install them.

I lost some stuff in a system restore some while ago, but reversing the system restore and making a back-up of the affected files, and then doing the restore again solved the problem. The important thing is to back up everything in your local folder back to the restore date.

Yea i figured this out the hard way after restoring and losing stuff but i know how to stop it or limit it.

If you know your going to restore say to 2 days ago, Only back up what trainz routes, locos ( Only if you have done something to edit it ) then you should be fine. System Restore only stuffs up stuff you have used inbetween dates.

I have read through this thread from top to bottom , either I have missed something or it was not mentioned ?
Prior to any updates , downloads , etc., I create a NEW restore point with a title , E.G. : prior to downloading Windows updates, prior to downloading McAffe updates.
If the download fails , and/or I am not satisfied with the results , I can restore to the point that things were previously .
I have never had a problem with Restore , and depend on it frequently !
