Basemap help please

Okay...so I fancied building a real location and have tried to use Google Earth with Basemaps to do so. I have been trying to use the 1kmx1km basemap pack on the DLS but having copied my google map to a file and convereted it to 1024x1024 pixels I can get it into the game without problem but when I lay it onto a baseboard it is somewhere near 4 times scaled up

I thought that this may be due to me not being 'high' enough above the real world in Google Earth before copying the map image but despite trying different heights by trial and error I can't get it right, and if I go too high I lose detail in the map.

Can someone point me towards the easiest, most practical basemap tutorial that is tried and tested? I have read several already but cant work out which one I consider to be the easiest or best.....

I want to learn to do this and am happy to learn to work with new software if I need to so just show me the way.....

Thanks in advance, Andy

The original image must be 1km sq. Resizing to 1024 will only alter the dimensions and enlarge the image. If it is UK routes I use the web site of http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ the centre sq can be saved as an 1km image.

Zoom the map in until you see the 1km scale at the bottom right of map. Each grid square is now 1km sq, right click in a square and save picture as (name it and save as bmp file). The image is the correct size to place straigh onto the basemap. Cant help about the correct size on google earth.

Thanks Stagecoach, having read your post I now know where I have gone wrong with google earth, its all about using squares which are 1kmx1km in size. This is something that I hadn't been doing so its no wonder that I couldn't get it to work:eek:

Thanks for putting me right

Andy
