Baseboards dispay black

I posted this problem in the ts10 forum, and there were no replies. Basemaps that work in 2004 and 2009 will only display as black squares,in 2010. I have done hundreds of them,in jpeg and bitmap formats. Any ideas?

Does any of the other content appear black?

If yes, check your hardware compression setting in Content Manager (File > Settings > Miscellaneous)

Enabled, as in ticked?

If that is yes, that is the source of the problem.

You will need to untick it, click save, then open for edit and recommit affected assets.

That was it! That solves 2 days of head scratching. But tell me,am I disabling something that normally should be checked? What does it mean,in regards to other content. This is a fresh install on a new pc,the basemap was the first thing I tried to import. Also, what is the preferd image to use in a basemap? Is it a TGA? Many thanks, Joe

Joe,

The issue has nothing to do with CM, or Trainz. This is a driver issue with certain video cards such as the NVidia 470-series and above. By default the setting is on in CM, and it works for the majority of cases.

For your performance, I doubt you'll see much difference if any. Most video cards don't support the texture compression anyway yet, and this setting is by the hardware and video driver.

TGA, uncompressed is the recommended format as it seems to perform well even though JPEG and BMP are supported. These latter two formats are compressed, and JPEG format are really compressed, and will cause performance issues. They are great for quick things such as temporary images, pictures, and such that need to travel quickly, but for more permanent images, such as those used in Base maps, and other objects, use the TGA (TARGA) format.

Remember, when saving TARGA (TGA) formatted files, save them uncompressed. In Gimp, for example, uncheck the RLE compression option before saving.

Hey thanks for the explanation. I know targas are used for most models. It makes since they are recommended for basemaps also.
