Australian screenshots

Hi Bearcat
That system only really works well for tram systems, where a curved wire is less noticeable (you put in more masts, or 'cables', to hold the wire!). On a mainline rail system, having a mast every 2m is going to look, well, odd!

It also means that your mesh won't repeat correctly (tramway overhead is generally a single wire, while 'heavy rail' has both the contact wire, and a supporting wire above). As the supporting wire 'sags' through it's length (creating a wave pattern), you need to ensure that your mesh repeats at the maximum allowable length for the pattern in use. Since overhead does not follow the exact center line of the track (it has about 2ft each side that it can move to - depending on the design of pantograph), these longer segments work correctly.

Of course, to model overhead properly you should actually move the wire from side to side at each mast (on a perfectly straight section of track, the wire will appear to 'zig-zag' a little along it's length).

Very well put Zec :)

Can I add one thing to this.
In most cases we cannot seem to envisage how a real railway looks. Unless actual DEM data is used and strictly followed we tend to make our curves much too sharp, for good looking overhead.

In Australia, overhead is used on heavy duty freight main lines in Country areas, or fast electric train services in Suburbia.

Wherever possible in Country areas fast curves (read very broad) are utilised. Suburbia, 80 kph or faster curves are constructed,

Of course out of Sydney and climbing Mountains, we are limited to the old right of way, and overhead becomes expensive and over complicated.

Today overhead is only built in country that keeps the cost of wire to a minimum. It is far cheaper to use Diesels today, than install the wire up the blue Mountains, as an example. Exceptions.. well Perth and Adelaide, I guess? ( but with wealthy State Governments, and not greedy private enterprise doing all this work)

Look forward to any method that improves the look of overhead, and the ease of installation
Cheers

David, it's beautiful, but maybe you could make a spline version of the bridge thing and the wireholds as trackside objects?? It means we can create catenaries (word) over platforms where they don't touch the platforms

Just one pic tonight, from the cab of EMU 78 as we approach the new (temporary) track layout at Ferny Grove in conjunction with work on the duplication of the last section from Keperra. The platform still needs decorating, OHW needs tidying, etc.

Rawr! - Don't mind the dino, he is my good luck charm/Motivator, as I move between sections of my route, he is always somewhere in my screenshots usually.

As per normal, all shots are WIP's and along ways to go, This part is making my brain explode. Cant wait to get out of my outer metro area and back onto rural. Never been a good city section builder, and have the actual city station to still do, GAH!

Nice work all round from everyone,

Davido (Ignore the Vset's - Surprised no one has mentioned them yet after that screen shot :P ) The Catenary's are very well done. Always enjoy seeing your content creations.

Cheers all,

Trent

Trent, I think you've done a great job on the city... and what buildings are you using in the background??

Maybe you could get into a bit of overhead... Maybe a station and then outer rural etc.

And can you please tell me how you made the outline, makes a great shot even better

Jamie

Hello Jamie,

I am using quite a few different buildings (all built-in 2010 or DLS available) its an actual city, has streets etc, just no where near ready for a screenshot, its rather barren in the city other than the buildings.(Plus its only 1/3 setout currently - Eastern section, have a North and West part in the works as well)

I am pretty much going to do teh basic city station and then move on to outer metro/rural again and leave the city til the last thing, as I just go into a mental blank easier when doing that part LOL.

Cheers

I know I'm a bit late with the adoration, but Axe1970's GT-TR route is awesome!:D

My new computer can finally run this route without getting an attack of the stutters, so i can finally take a good look at it.

I love it, Axe!

Now, if only my photography could do it the justice it deserves.:hehe::hehe:

Cheers,

Matt.

Oh well in that case...

I'll take an 80 class! :hehe:

I think a davido 80 class would look great in pn colours

Well i would like to see a pn 80 class or a freight rail blue 442 floating round the dl station some day i would be slaping these things together my self i lose my cool doing it no idea how the rest create great models

a pn one would be good

A pn 80 would be nice :p

yes, we get the point.

Now stop SPAMMING this freaking thread, will you!

That will not result in the instantaneous appearance of content you want.

Now, GO AWAY!

I get the feeling that someone, who shall remain nameless for their own protection doesn't get that I was joking with Davido. Might have gone right over his or her head...

:o

Thanks for the compliment Matt. I feel a little awe struck with some of the screen shots others are producing at the moment.

I have extended Georgetown to Tarin Rocks by another 50+km so far.

However I have been Heavily distracted playing with a few other games.
Gran Turismo5, Portal 2 and FSX.

Good to finally see you are enjoying my route.

Cheers

Hiya Axe, nice to see ya on the forums :)

Your route is still a favorite of mine, which gets a run or two most weekends, My kids thoroughly enjoy that route.

GT5 and FSX(over 400 hours of logged (Full realism) flight time in FSX - My Flight Sim PC/Flight stick setup is more expensive that my work truck LOL) are an addiction of mine as well. Though recently I have bought DCS A10C Warthog and I am in Flight Sim heaven with this one. Have you checked that one out at all ?

Cheers

Hi Trent,

You trainz screenshots are amazing. I am really enjoying them.

I don't have the Warthog, I might look into it. I am really enjoying the Orbx FTX/Ozx scenery/airports ATM. I have been doing a lot of GA flying. I think I have logged in about 700+ hours.

My setup includes the Saitek X52 Pro + Trackir. I might get some Saitek rudders one of these days.

Ok back to Trainz talk. :)

Hmmm... I better post a few Screen-shots.

W.I.P.

Thanks Axe, been putting a heap of effort into my route. Trying for a nice detailed route for Cab or chase view :) Some nice shots from you as well. I be looking forward to seeing your extended version if you release it. I always enjoy running your Georgetown to Tarren rocks routes sessions.

Orbx and Ozx scenery are the best mate I as well have them all. Makes FSX a joy :)

Back to Trainz as Axe mentioned.

A few shots of St.Claire Footy field.
