Australian screenshots

Perseverance Matt :) Its amazing what can come of something so simple. The above screenshot is quite a nice piece. Your been putting out some interesting yards etc. I could see you creating quite a good route.

The rule I go by mostly is : Getting bored, stop placing items, lay some track, or textures. I try and do something a little different every night on my route to keep the interest high :)

Shall have some screen shots of Port Levendale again this weekend, Been working away once again. (I so need a new job)

Cheers

Trent

Thanks for the votes of confidence guys.:D

Tanvaras, you're absolutely correct. I do have a few nice little yards lying around; it can't be that hard to put 4-5 baseboards down, texture them and get something good for a hour or so's diversion from the more realistic routes you guys are responsible for.:hehe::hehe:

We shall see,

Matt.

I aim for a run of 5-15km between "locations" on my route. For example, one such "location" is simply where the line converges from double track to single track. Another such location is a passing loop with a disused station building and overgrown loading bank - ie, no fancy track layouts, just something different for the driver. At the moment I'm working on "Orange Hills", based mostly on the Orange Station/Yard/Junction area. This has been an interesting challenge after about 25km's or so of what is essentially just track and landscape.

As Trent says above me, keep it fresh. In recent weeks I've (over successive afternoons/evenings) laid about 6km of track from "Holloway" (Blayney) to "Reeves Forest" (Polonia Loop). I did the landscape, laid the track and then the loop. I did the signalling for the loop, and added some basic town items. I then got right into detailing the town, and textured the board to see what it would look like. I then textured a couple of boards back towards "Holloway" (closing the "untextured, undetailed gap").

When texturing got a bit old, I played a game - each night, I would detail and texture one board (I throw down all scenery save for the vegetation, texture, throw down trees/grasses etc, add more textures, and then tweak until finished). If I could finish one "board" sized area, I would then go on and do some more landscaping further on, lay track etc. Once I "closed the gap" I then built and put basic details down for "Springhill*" (Springhill) and then kept laying track to "Orange Hills" (Orange). Tonight I've thrown down points and signals, and a couple of speedboards. Tomorrow night I'll likely finish off the trackwork and start working on the town. When I'm done with the "Orange Hills" area, I'll work my way back to "Springhill" and "Reeves Forest".

I still have about 35km of track to lay, so that's an ace up my sleeve should I get bored again. Keep it fresh. The layout currently sits close to 100km of track, with about 20km still to detail, texture etc. I'm having too much fun to stop and release it (selfish, I know). I have a smallish module done independantly, but it's not much fun to drive as there is plenty of track, but not enough oppertunity for shunting.

Anyway, some food for thought.

Cheers,
(The other) Trent

*Okay, I couldn't think of a cool name, so just run with it.

I agreee with what others said, and Kenith? That 'Yarraman' looks absolutely idylic mate, eagerly waiitng for the BVL to come to fruition, and will wait until the next millenium, if that is what it'll take :)

I find it difficult to get hold of content these days. I am still used to downloading from the DLS to CMP, but I can't do that anymore. Just get a "this page cannot be displayed" message, no download possible.

I find when I try downloading stuff nowadays, a lot of content just won't download. Like CMP will just hang when trying to download the item.

I would like to get back into route building but getting content is not as easy as the old days.

Hi fellas (and girls?)

I ve done a bit of changing to my first module attempt. Once again, if you guys like it or have any ideas for improvement please let me know. :)

Looks good, could i politely say that i would like it even more if you used the "brown ballast" texture under your track, to depict the "road bed".

Never been to Australia, but i doubt there is a railway in the world, where the ballast ends neatly all the way along the track. ;)

I also hold down the [ or ] key when texturing so that the textures are laid randomly in all directions.

NSWGR Hopefield:

Matt.

Great work so far.

But do you really think that the NSWGR tended their dirt to the very edge of the fence?

I think it looks too tidy. I really think that the grass would be growing well toward the rails. Perhaps if you found a darker/dirty grass texture for around the yards?

Might help with the realism.

But what do I know? I'm just drunk after getting home from a far-too-long motorcycle ride. Nothing better after a long ride than a /many beers.

Matt, A great improvement as of late. Seeing all these great modules lately has inspired me to get back into working on my own three board module styled on Morpeth station:

The owner of the local garage can at last retire the old Ford Model B tow truck after many decades of faithful service to region, having purchased a newer Bedford Model J tow truck. Rust in pieces.

pinza, in your little scene there, what apart from the pile of tiles is actually textured on to a flat plane? very effective scenicing and light on resources.

Very good Matt. Like Boobless Ed I thought the squared off dirt was not looking "right". The only other thing I would suggest is that you allow yourself a bit of room on the edge of your roads. By that I mean moving the fence back a bit and having a stretch of dirt show between the road and fence (spray a lighter dirt colour a bit wider than the road), maybe put in some grass and a tree or two and move the shops back a bit so that cars can stop clear of the road.

Aside from that the module has improved out of sight over the last couple of days.

Awesome photos guys and gals! Makes me want to pack my baggage car and drive my Amtrak P42DC from the U.S. to Australia for a visit. :hehe: If only I had a real P42DC and a baggage car, but, with the ability to fly. The flying train would be a reality. :hehe:

Thanks for the tips Railwayz. Have done all, except the grass; I can never seem to get an effect that looks natural. Still, practice makes perfect, as they say.

That is a matter of opinion; I think it has potential, and with a little (okay, quite a lot:p) of prodding, it may turn into something semi-decent; but 'improved out of sight', at this early stage?

I'm flattered, really, I am!:D

Anyway, random shot from testing:

Edit: I need some cars, suitable for 50's through 80's. Whose assets should I look for?

Cheers,

Matt.

G'day Pete, Thank you for the kind words. The tiles are basically just a textured box, rather than a 2d plane. I wish I could make 2d planes look that good :hehe: The scene is sort of a scene within a scene, the full scene being shown below:
