Getting Older :)
Rubbish is not the word I wanted to use but I have too.

When I and many others (new) users see an item in CM 2010 (version 3.3) and download it, we expect to be able to see/use it in Surveyor.

Not told to go to another site to download the ****** thing (again).

This is just not right and these are the words I normally would not use. I mean no disrespect to the creator though I find this method of uploading/displaying content somewhat objectionable.

This is ... interesting. Was the content on the DLS originally? Perhaps this is a hosting solution at the request of the creator? I'm confused.

Oh, that is so wrong! This can only lead to madness, chaos, and discontent. Seriously!

EDIT: Ed's confused, and I'm worried.

I would say that this INS'T N3V's or the DLS's issue but OCR's way of protesting the DLS Cleanup and this placeholder is telling you to go to their site instead of the DLS to get it...

Of course this may also be a way to point people to content no longer hosted on the DLS and if that's the case it's better than getting a missing kuid and having to hunt for it...

Well, maybe, but what happens if this object is a ways from the track and not easily noticed among all the other scenery. Then, you have this 'thing' sitting there like the monolith in 2001.

It may keep you from getting an error, but doesn't look very professional. Good grief! It's 50M on a side!

somewhat objectionable.

Completely objectionable, Craig.

That's not the Power of the Third Party Sites... that's using the DLS for advertising, even though it could be a freeware item. That's the Power of Doing What I like No Matter What. :hehe:

Advertising and demonstrating should be done by using an ad-person on the forum streets... and not sending 2001 Space Odyssey monoliths to the DLS. :hehe:

The advertising side of Alberte  when he was younger and travelled overseas.

Alberte, you're hilarious!! I love the picture.:hehe::hehe::hehe:

I did not even think to see how big it was, but the whole idea is wrong to me. We do not see other sites such as TPR doing this or the many others around our Trainz Community.

Alberte and IberTrainz have a thread for advertising their content, as does OverlordNZ (many of them actually) so then why would someone go to this effort and have Auran allow it !

I have seen many items on the DLS with links to their sites, but I have never tried to download any of the items. Maybe I should have and I may have seen something similar.

P.S. I wonder how much money is made by looking at someones own site, I am sure Auran get nothing out of it.

Their threads are all in the proper panel - Payware. That's where they belong and rightly so. To stick this 'thing' on the DLS and ask that you go to another site in that manner is just simply wrong.

I suspect that all the content checking Auran does before allowing an item on the DLS is totally automatic; no human actually verifies WHAT the item is. That's how it got by them. But, to try and visually (manually) verify content would slow things down to way past the point of no return.

I hope this hole in processing gets plugged.

Yes Bill, I can understand that and know about this particular way of uploading content and linking it to another site. I also have seen the instructions/rules about this, but this is the first time I have looked at the system since the "Content Manager" was introduced to Trainz.

However, to show it in CM (CMP/whatever) to me is wrong as many new users would not know what is going on.

The other/next question then becomes "how can Auran/N3V show this content in CM that is on another site"

Maybe if someone tries to download the content then they are directed to the other site which is how it works if you go to the "black pages" web site of the DLS.

A place holder.

Excellent idea. I considered it a long time ago but never had the courage to actually do it.
Actually Phil, Tafweb had a place holder in his last version of TrainzObjectz but not for the purpose you mean. It was actually a great idea.

First thing that comes to mind is a requirement to include a thunbnail. At least the ones using CM in 'Thumbnail' mode instead of 'Text' mode will see just a black square (or whatever is used as the actual placeholder).

In text mode, perhaps a new category of 'placeholder' and a new left-hand icon to indicate 3-rd party site.

There was an external download link authorized by Auran at upload...

This was put on the DLS to keep people from WHINING about it..
SO DO WHAT IT SAYING OR DON'T USE THE ITEM...
CASE CLOSED......
Maybe I should not got to the extra time to put them on the DLS
The everyone can bitch about that.
TOUGH COOKIES!!! You want the trees you come to my site..

Auran allows you to put in an external link POINTING TO AN EXTERNAL SITE when uploading BITCH AT THEM..the item is free..advertising will just increase MY traffic costs..so all you 'people' that don't like it can can just plain (censored) and delete the object..

Cheers all...thanks for the additional exposure..
