Assigning / Reassigning Hot Keys?

Is there a way of assigning or reassigning locomotive function hot keys? I have some of Jointedrail's excellent locomotives and would like to be able to add hot key commands for some of the in-cab functions, like turning the wipers on and off, controlling interior cab lights, etc. I know you can do it with the cursor in cab-view, but it can be cumbersome.

Existing key commands are listed in the ..\N3V\TS12\UserData\settings\keyboard.txt file. You can change key combinations for the functions in that file but you can't add new functions. New commands would require adding a script file.
The existing file contains these 2 commands:
train_cabin_wipers_on alt comma
train_cabin_wipers_off alt period
