Another TransDEM Issue

Ok it worked for the most part. See below. However there were some missing UTM clippings although not too problematic since these were not significant changes in the land. The messages went like,"Baseboard for UTM tile not found - xxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx skipped" after the export.

However most of the images are there. Thanks for the help.

Good to hear.

The anchor point for each UTM tile is the south west corner. If the baseboard for that corner does not exist, the UTM tile will not be placed.

I am finding TransDEM extremely limited in this respect compared to the old fashioned HOG method. It's a great shame really as TransDEM certainly makes the process a lot simpler, it's just that the whole experience is totally marred by only being able to export teeny tiny bits of terrain.

With HOG and a little time I can persuade it to create ground files consisting of many hundreds of Trainz baseboards, perhaps even thousands. On the same system, TransDEM seems to baulk at anything over 100 boards.

Stuart,

Transdem can export more baseboards. I have created a 277+ miles of 5 board wide route equaling over 2000+ tiles. Its is very easy to do. Your computer just needs enough memory to handle it. I do know if you use NED 1/3 arc data, you will more than likely have to make 50-75 mile segment (modules) and merge them together in TRS. I have recently been enlightened on the use of the 1/3 arc data, and the detail is worth it. I still have to figure out how to get the Google Maps to make UTM tiles.

...my thoughts, recently experienced...

 I find the first error pictured in this thread(Errors writing file), were cured by using only one folder for all files that TransDEM creates....no deleting anything!

Yes, you have no mask applied...I have been exporting to Trainz many routes without a mask, however the raster maps were present, along with vector lines drawn by me.

I have even overridden the mentioned error by not using a mask.

Yes, 600km(373miles) is quite large to handle in one process!

Don't be afraid to handle this as several maps, I add even small sections of maps made by merging them in Surveyor.

Using smaller sections decreases the wait time, allowing you to review your work in Trainz

I have since discovered why I was having problems. In my case it seems the error was caused by having one edge of the selection box just a hair outside the area covered by the DEM.

It seems that this error is a "one size fits all" then, and isn't necessarily a result of too large an export area, too much data or too few system resources.

. . .I have recently been enlightened on the use of the 1/3 arc data, and the detail is worth it. . .

Kevin, see my reply in the Tennessee Pass thread regarding a source of 1/3rd second data. I have been using it for years and frankly wouldn't even consider less resolution if the 1/3rd is available. There are now some areas of the US covered by 1/9th second data which is equivalent to a horizontal resolution of approximately 3m. In theory the new 5m grid in TS2009 could make use of this!

I found this...

 Here is a new link to Index of /srtm/version2_1/SRTM3/North_America .

It's version 2, that is 1/3 for all of the US-Americas.

The old link was broken for version 1, also I hear that Homeland Security is trying to limit access...

I downloaded 167 maps, between N25-N40/W74-W91. The total came to 165mb.

This is a map I made of the area covered so far...

i saw the error during the conversion. i figured out to is important to show the basegrids in view and trainz meniu. and when you select the area to be a little bigger the marked area, Than will be ok.
