Amtrak Collision:

According to the news this morning - sounds like the driver of the moving train passed a red signal. That's not official though - the report came from a firefighter and Amtrak haven't released any information apart from the basic 'two trains collided at low speed'.....

Thankfully it was low speed and the worst injury seems to be a broken arm to a passenger.

In the UK we have over 200% more trains on a network 10% the size of US yet we have 10% of the collisions by my calculations that's around 190% more colour blind people in the US than the UK or perhaps they have taken knowing what Red is out of the pre-school curriculum...

I understand - I'm originally from the UK (and from a railway city, Derby). The plane and car have taken mostly over which is a shame. A few decent lines out here could make a massive difference - but politics are causing a lot of delays on the ones planned.......

Yay! Winning! Go USA, go USA!

Hi Andy,

So, are you saying that rail accidents in the USA are caused by color blind locomotive engineers?

Can you provide links to the data to support your calculations?

That's because you can't afford gas and your own vehicles. Guess they took personal choice out of your curriculum.

Dave.......

Sorry my last post was a little insensitive and could have been put alot better:o:o been a long c****y day....

It should have been why does the US government not pass a law that makes all rail-companies havve to install AWS or ATP the amount of lost revenue through crashes that will be saved will recoup the cost...

I don't think personal choice has ever been on the national corriculum, it wouldn't by defination be personal choice if its taught it becomes brain washing :hehe:....

Again sorry if I sounded a bit brash before...

:)

Consider this (USA vs UK)

I've never been to the UK (would like to some day) so what do I know?

But consider this theory:

USA grade-level crossings/total USA road-rail crossings > UK grade-level crossings/total UK total road-rail crossings

I think this is true simply because the USA is less densely populated than the UK, although there may be cultural reasons as well.

So my theory is that the USA has overall a lower percentage of road-rail grade separation than the UK, hence a higher "car-train" incident rate.

At some point, personal actions will overcome any and all laws or safety devices. See my quote at the bottom of my post. Everyday, someone proves it right.

The last clothes iron I bought had a warning label to remind you to not iron your clothes while wearing them. Someone worked their whole life to cause that warning label.

Oh, and don't sweat it Andy.

In the US we have the right to be stupid, (personal choice) and most of us don't need the government to make everything all nice and safe for us. Mexico is even more willing to let you drive off a cliff, but I think warning signs and flashing light and gates and ringing bells constitute a fine alternative to absolute anarchy and absolute government control.

USA - unprotected crossings

I live in a small community (Sandpoint, Idaho, USA) with three railways (BNSF, UP, Montana Raillink) with many rural "unprotected crossings", that is; no crossing gates or lights. The unprotected crossings all have striped warning signs and have a stop sign as well.

Apparently, many of our residents haven't figured out what this means and so car-train incidents are a regular source of news for our local newspaper. Most of the motorists involved will not ever do it again, or do much else for that matter.
