In the early beta testing days, we tried X-Box controllers. I don't remember what each button did though because it's been a very long time and many versions ago.

Isn't there a new xbox version of trainz? I'd imagine that would have code supporting the controller. (That could someday migrate to the non-xbox version.)

because my routes are small there almost like a model railway and i just like the tactile feeling of being able to shunt and move trains around in a small area with a rotery controller

There are small knob-like devices such as the Space mouse which would work for this. There was someone who used that years ago but I can't remember who it was now.

The Xbox controller works well in the desktop version now because that technology is built-in. Editing in Surveyor is doable but it was uncomfortable for me probably because I'm used to a mouse.

Thinking about the testing, we also tried joysticks and I had to borrow an old Thrustmaster joystick from my brother for the testing. Like the Xbox controller, it worked quite well for what it was supposed to do.

That is likely why the X-Box version doesn't have Surveyor included. It is a driver version only.

The Kensington Orbit trackball has a scrolling wheel around the trackball and it is programmable. I don't know if the scrolling wheel is programmable. Maybe there is a YT video review of it. It is just $44. The Space Mouse Pro is $319.
