almost ready to give up on TRAINZ - is there hope ???

Hello Citizens,

I am experiencing a lot of frustration with this application:

I purchased a retail copy of TS2010 EE back when it first came out, but it didn't last long on my computer (among other things, the "Speed Trees" [?] were implemented horribly and drove me mad). Last week I decided to give it (Trainz) another try; I installed my original copy (build 41491) and successfully patched it all the way up to build 49933 (took some time, but all went smoothly). The whole thing was kind of an experiment. I decided to uninstall the application and was unable to do so - I kept getting an "Out of memory" error. I sought help here and was told that this is a known issue; the solution is to DELETE the application and then run some application (CCleaner was reccommended) to fix the (Windows) registry. Seemed to me an unsatisfying solution, but I appreciated the help and I followed those suggestions. Deleted TS2010, downloaded/installed/ran CCleaner.

Then yesterday, I saw that the Aerotrain was offered at a sale price (< $5) - and I purchased it. Of course, this meant that I needed to re-install and patch TS2010 back up to build 49933 (call me crazy if you want).

I re-installed TS2010 and successfully patched build 41491 to build 41615. But now, when I attempt to patch build 41615 to build 42203, the patch runs for a while and then fails, telling me, "Unable to patch *.* (something) - file contents do not match."

Is it time to give up?

Thanks in any case,

cs

So you really didn't give it any chance at all, had you any real interest in the first place, there were & still are many who could have helped you to
sort out any issues, as they have done for countless users who are still valued members of the Trainz comunity.

Instead, you decided to be a quitter & blame 'Trainz' for being beyond your ego of asking for help.

Your "frustration" is of your own making, sorry for being blunt, but ...................

Your other rail simulation options are not going to be as detailed, or as flexible, and cannot let you edit down to the pixel level like this product. Try T2 when it comes out, since you didn't want to use TS12.

In my opinion - it's not time to give up, but it may require another reinstall.

What I will suggest though is to make a note if any patch errors appear, as most errors have solutions.

Shane

Shane is correct.

Uninstall again. You may want to try Revo Uninstall which has been around for ages.

Delete any leftover folders that may remain if there are any.

Run CC-Clean which will also remove any temporary files and folders in C:\Documents and Settings \Local Settings\Temp or C:\Users\CurlSnout\Appdata\Local Temp.

Reboot and try again.

Many times, whether this is Trainz or another program, there are bits and pieces left over that need removing after a program is uninstalled. The best way to do this is to use a tool such as CC-Cleaner as that will go in and remove the bits. If you attempt to reinstalled, the installer will pick up on the leftover bits and see those instead of the new version. This can cause the error you have seen. I actually saw this kind of thing happen on a server that I was attempting to patch and a patch had failed previously. By removing the leftover bits and pieces, the installer worked fine.

It's replies like this that lead people to conclude that the TRAINZ community is not very welcoming when it comes to new users.

You mis-read my post - I DID ask for help, I received help, and I expressed gratitude for the help I received.

Now, I'm making a sincere effort to install and use the application, but I've encountered some technical difficulty. I was, and am, asking for help. Instead you offer harsh criticism. I have no interest in starting an argument with anyone. What I would like to do is run TRAINZ. Guess I'm on my own.

Thanks anyway. Have a nice day.

Thanks, Shane and John, for offering helpful advice. I will try to do as you have suggested. I'll post back to let you know how I get on.

Peace,

Don't forget, do not install in your C drive (the auto choice). Make sure the chosen drive has enough space for trainz plus downloads once you get running properly.
Download the patches and then when patching, turn internet off (unplug), turn off AV temporarily. I also disable UAC, some frown on that idea but I think it's a nuisance.
You only need to go to build 49933 unless you want multiplayer.

Thanks, fran1. I've been installing into a directory of my own choosing (C:\applications\simulators\Trainz - TS2010); free hard drive space is available in abundance. For patching, I've been following the guidlines posted by Auran/N3V on the service packs download page - and by you: unplugging from the net and (temporarily) disabling antivirus software. And, not running anything else while the patching process is underway.

Really only interested (for now) in getting back to build 49933, as it's the Aerotrain that I want to run.

You make me feel optimistic. Away from home right now but anxious to return and try again.

Something that I have always done is to manually download the patches I need and transfer the downloaded files to a memory stick (or you could use an external hard drive) and then I run the patch from there. It doesn't happen with all users but some have found a problem when they download the patch to the same drive as the full game is installed (ie the 'C' Drive usually). They have found that by running the patch from an alternate location helps and I certainly have not had any problems doing it this way.

Good luck, Andy

The main problem with patching has is not turning apps/programs off that can interfere with the process.
Beware though that some will seem to stop at 50% done, they haven't, be patient, in fact ignore the computer until it say's patching complete (or if your unlucky failed).

Don't let a few opinionated bigmouths and make-believe tough guys turn you off to this forum. It's a great place full of friendly and helpful people.

One thing I have done that has avoided interference from outside when patching is to boot my computer into diagnostic mode, then run the patch. I do the same thing if I expect to run a long session in Driver with good results.

I do that as well. I have Trainz on a dedicated SSD. I download the patches to my internal HDD storage drive, and run them from there. I keep everything Trainz away from my C drive. It also helps if something goes awry. If I need to reinstall Windows, which I do every 6 months or so, Trainz is still intact. If I need to reinstall Trainz, I just reformat the drive it is on.

I do the same here. My Trainz TS12 lives on its own hard drive and has all the room to do what it needs to do. It also helps too when it comes to backups because I don't need to dig into the bowels of Windows to find my data.

Update: I re-installed my original TS2010 (build 41491) and patched it to build 41615. Last night I allowed the patch to build 42203 run overnight (this one takes a while). I'm happy to report that this time, the patch completed successfully. Now it's on to 43434 > 44088 > 49933 > Aerotrain. I noticed when both patches competed, the patch dialog window was populated with a list, saying "<kuid :X:X> does not match the dataset record." But then, at the bottom, this: "0 Errors, 0 Warnings." Is this normal or to be exected? Another question: Each time I go to 'Start' the newest updated/patched version, the application spends a long time, "Updating the asset database" - during which it seems additional content is loaded (I checked the size/number of files before and after), but I don't know what is being added or where. Also normal? Please forgive the formatting of this post; for some reason I'm not allowed to use the 'Enter' key to separate paragraphs. Thanks to everyone who has offered advice and encouragement. And for indulging a growing list of questions from a novice. cs

A few suggestions...after each patch, reboot your computer. When it restarts, don't open Trainz. Do a quick database repair at the very least. Reboot. Apply next patch and repeat the process. After the final patch and database repair and reboot, then start the game. Hopefully you saved your content, now you can reimport it.

Congratulations on the birth of your Trainz TS2010 install!

These warnings are normal and the very long time updating the database is part of the normalness of Trainz. :)

Here are some tips you may find useful now that your Trainz is installed:

* Back up your install, and especially your Userdata folder frequently. This is where all your downloads will reside as well as any routes you create.

* At the Launcher, go to the Options and then Developer tab and check the Show database process windows checkbox. Use these to confirm when it is safe to shutdown or restart your computer. When these disappear from the taskbar, it is safe to perform those actions.

* With this you should be all set. Have fun!

Thanks, boc61, for your suggestions (although at this point I've already installed three of the patches and checked to ensure that Trainz remains functional after each one). How do I perform a, "....quick database repair...." without opening Trainz? In terms of saving and reimporting content, is this achieved using the built-in Content Manager? I haven't touched that so far - still trying to understand what all of these 'kuid' things (as well as 'Dependencies') are about. By the way, I'm not a total novice when it comes to train simulators; I ran MSTS for years (before and after MSTS Bin and using Open Rails) and I have run several incarnations of RailWorks/Train Simulator. I believe they all excel in their own way. But I am starting fresh with Trainz, and it seems there is much to learn that is specific to this application. Thanks again for extending help to a new guy. cs

You would need to open Content Manager in order to do a quick database repair.

As for your enter key issue, you can either use compatibility mode in your browser, or using Forum Actions > General Settings then change the Editor format.
