Advice sought!

I am a week into trainz 2006 {old I know - was an xmas stocking filler from the wife!) and have discovered I need over 40k of downloads to make it perform better - Groan. Question is, am I better off quitting it and buying the latest and greatest 2012 and starting from there?

Downloading more assets won't make it perform better. Or do you mean a service pack ?
If the build number, bottom right as you launch trainz, is 3092 or 3335 or 7 it's up to date. This is if it's an auran version.
I still run 06 now and again but have to say get 2010 or 2012.
2010 has compatibility mode so you can run older content, 12 has not.
Minimum comp spec = a fast core duo 3ghz and a decent graphics card. Anything less and you'll be watching a slide show.

Hi Fran. No, I have the latest. The downloads I am referring to are those at the DS that say I have either out of date, missing discrepancies or are faulty, the count is 43k+. Should I download them at all? Performance wise it's fine as my pc is respectable enough, no stutter or anything like that, but in lots of scenarios and sessions it's obvious something is up when routes stop as no more track and train falls off end lol. When I looked at those they were missing files. What is it with these KUID'S? you start downloading the missing data and then it stops as the KUID cannot be found - driving me nuts! Not good for a newbie to be having these issues but I will keep going as I like the over all feel of the thing and am partial to simulators - loved the FS range.

You will need at least Trainz Classics in order to download any updated versions of assets, as most of the updates are either Trainz Classics 1+2, Trainz Classics 3 or even TS2009.

Content updating has left users of 2006 and below out on a limb.
2006 is build number 2.6, nothing below build 2.7 is accepted for content as of sept 2010.
Updated assets get an updated kuid number for eg 12345:56789:1, while you want the asset without the :1.
Unless you know how to backdate them your stumped.
Get 2010 and patch it to build 44088, if your comps up to it you'll enjoy it.

TS2010 isn't that expensive at the moment, either direct from N3V as a download or Amazon typically have it a little cheaper.

If you're on the mailing list you might see a 50% off TS12 in the latest edition of the newsletter.

Amazon UK have TS2010 at £10.95 at present that's the best version for a starter (IMO). Once you get hooked You will want to buy TS12 from N3V (Auran).
You must have a decent specified PC to run them though.

If it's not an NV3 version the patches will not apply, check before you buy.

My advice is that if it's a digital download for TS2010 on any site other than N3V's own site, avoid it, as you will not be able to install any patches. (and it will be build 43361, which is well known as being unpatchable).

In terms of boxed copies, Just Trains is a good choice for UK users (like me), as the required patches mirror the ones on the Service Packs page (and I also have the relevant link on my patching guide on my tutorial website)

EDIT: This applies to the TS2010 version only. The TS2009 version requires a patch from the Just Trains site, and I'm not sure about the TS12 version.

I didn't know that about just trains.
At £10.95 the amazon version is from just trains, buy it.

What version of TRS2006 is it ?

If it is build 3337 you need no SP

The trainz build # is at the bottom R of the start page

TRS2006 is perfect for the beginner an casual user ... Mezzoprezzo uses TRS2004 with spectacular results !

Folks thanks for all the guidance. You have a wonderful community. I am an old hand at the flight simulators so this is not as difficult for me as it might be for complete new simmers. I have a boxed version - Maplins and Gamestop carry them here in Ireland at about 8 euros a pop. The wife got Trainz 2006 and 2 other games for 15 euros in an in-store deal so I did not do too bad. Its the last version off it so did not need the patch but the download station is driving me nuts. I have seen improvements with some of the updates but the software behind DS is not the best to run database archives on, that's my only crib - enjoying it so far but think I will move up to 2010 next week.

As added info - I am using a Dell Dimension 330 with Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 2.20GHz with a basic on board graphics card - Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family and am getting excellent frame rates - I would advise those having low FR's to switch from open GL to Direct X, the gain is incredible! Not even a flicker when using the graphic intense scenarios, all sliders are maxed out too!
