Advertising?

3Ds MAX will be my demise
G'day!

So, a few minutes ago, I pop onto the Forums to check out some stuff, then, something hits me smack bang in the face. Advertisments. Since when were they included on the TDF? Have they only been added recently? Because already they are bugging me, we have to deal with advertising on YouTube, but on Trainz as well? I don't think so. We wanna see Trainz stuff, not ads on how to make 500$ in less that two hours.

Cheers! :)

Jake.

$$$

Auran want some extra cash for their games, maybe so they can FIX. THE. DAMN. DLS, as your user title once was:hehe:

I've noticed that between this morning and this afternoon, I seem to have acquired this annoying bloody thing on the main page:

Not the most discreet advertising around, is it?

How would I go about blocking it?

Matt.

No excess advertising, thank you very much! :-(

Yea, I have just noticed these new ads now. They were not around last night. Why more ads? At least put them at the bottom of the page!

Retro.

Well, I noticed them too, and I want something more trainzy. A VMD, Jointed Rail or other trainz related ads would be great.

Do more Trainzy searches. Sadly, to specifically have VMD/JR ads, VMD or JR would have to PAY for the ads. Looks like they are doing AdSense by Google because I am at least getting relevant ads. I'm getting stuff for local businesses, my college textbook rental company, etc.

Lets face it. SOMEBODY has to pay. Unless of course, you'd like to go to an entirely subscription based model: No downloadable content at all unless you pay for it. No use of these community forums unless you are a FCT holder. Granted, a lot of the stuff is provided for free by our group of content creators, but nothing in life is FREE. Somebody has to pay for the servers that host the content. Somebody has to pay for the bandwidth to get the content from the servers. A quality scripted detailed railcar is about 2MB, DaveSnow's burned out building is 3MB, RRSignal's 30th street station is 7.36MB. I've downloaded single assets that are over 15MB. Lets say I want to D/L the station, maybe a few cars to haul people to the station, the burned out building to put in the neighborhood, and so on, you are talking a lot of data. This discussion comes up every month or so, "why can't I keep getting stuff for free? For crying out loud, I bought Trainz 2004 seven years ago"

I've got games on my PS3 that I :gasp: bought (just like I had to buy Trainz) that have add on scenarios and extras, but they all have to be paid for through the PlayStation store and pay the content providers. Sure, I can keep playing it with the built in content, but it eventually gets stale, and I like to have fresh content every now and then.

If the cost of fresh content for free is a little banner ad that I really didn't pay any attention to until people started moaning and groaning about it, so be it.

IE9's tracking protection option- enable 'your personalized list' gets rid of it for me.

With all the added income received from the advertisements, N3V can make more money, all the while using inadequate servers that provide sporadic or non-existant connections to the DLS Free Server ... and they now also can afford to make more support cutbacks for their paying customers, ie: decreasing the Black pages DLS to show only the first 500 assets search limit ... etc ... etc ...:hehe:

Slabay has some good points on this. Guess I will have to just get myself used to the ad being there, after being used to the ad not being there until today. :o

These ads might be going a little too far.

Just a few minutes/little while ago, I noticed that one of the ads here on the forums for apparently some adult/pornographic game. I have not seen the ad since, but I will edit this post if I see it again. The ads that I see here on the forums are often for various games that I do not play and are not interested in, along with various other ads. But the possibility of "adult" ads appearing on the forums is not good. What I saw of the ad was not overly graphic to my knowledge, but I still believe that such suggestive ads should not be around here.

The scourge of the ads: I'm not sure what you saw, but I would be willing to guess it was for Evony, a Medieval online strategy game. They've got some incredibly racy ads to lure people in, but the game is nothing like that. I've got to say that the ads aren't all that family-oriented....

I've gotten them for Eve Online, a sci-fi game, and today's ad for me was a Florida Resident special deal ad for Walt Disney World.

Funnily enough, until your post I had the wrong idea about Evony. Based on their ads I always assumed it was some sort of weird porn role-playing game, because of pictures of, erm, girls saying things like "come play, my lord..."

G'day,

They meant a game of tidly winks:D.
What a dirty mind you have.:hehe:

Have a good one,

Ads have been on the forum for a while but were more discreet in their placement. They appear to be done through Google Ads so N3V will have only limited choices as to what appears. Google chooses ad based on the content of the page they appear on. Hence ads for games.

Sadly, Google has a political agenda here in the states of pushing big government and Democrats. This means that it is common to see in your face and offensive ads appearing on websites that are expressing the exact opposite viewpoint.

As others have said, use an ad blocker if they bother you. N3V gets the money whether your browser blocks them or not.

I don't mind the Advertisements too much, as long as they don't go over the edge (sexual/violent etc). However, I am glad to say that at least the advertisements aren't popping up or on the side of the pages as well while in any threads that usually has Screen shots etc in it to distract the user even more or ruin the photo the commenter made.

Edit: Exactly right after I posted this I see a shoot Osama Bin laden Ad, as well as how rare, a Roller Coaster Tycoon (1) Advertisement.
