Adding another Hard Drive

Ok here it goes. I bought a 1TB drive to connect to the USB port yesterday because I have downloaded so much stuff I was running out of space on drive C:. My question is can I just move the Auran folder over to drive E: or do I have to reinstall the software there?

Your USB drive is not a good location for Trainz content. The connection speed isn't as good as it could be and occasionally you can expect Windows to time out waiting for the drive.

Internal drives have a more robust connection. However to answer your question Trainz expects the software and contents to be in the same folder whatever so yes. However technically there are ways to rename folders within Windows.

John thanks for the reply. I thought that it might not run as well so I installed 06 on the USB drive and it seems to run just fine. That is why I was thinking of moving 09 over to it also. If I have to reinstall 09 to the new drive instead of just moving it, that would be a lot of work. Carl

Just moving the program would probably break the .cdp file and Trainz:// url associations, which would mean double clicking a CDP file wouldn't load it in CMP and clicking download links on the DLS website would not work. Not sure what other stuff might be affected. And as mentioned, a USB drive is a lot slower then an internal drive due to the max transfer rate of USB.

You can move trainz from drive to drive using the control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management. From there you can copy + paste from drive to drive then deleting the files as you go. You only need to send a new trainz shortcut from the drive to the desktop.
I've done it several times but must admit didn't know if it would work or not the first time.

That's just a semi educated guess based on a USB drive that I have that can lose the connection on a 200 gig file copy, but at under 50 gigs is quite happy. If your system will run 06 from it then 09 shouldn't be that much different. Perfmon seems to suggest that once loaded Trainz doesn't use the disk heavily.

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I will just move a lot of other stuff to the new drive and open up the 80G C: for Trainz. Carl

But is it possible to move Trainz from directory to directory on the same drive? (See my thread in TS10 forum, having installed TS10 to the 'wrong' directory.)
