Hello,
Recently, I got an e-mail from Auran, suggesting that I purchase TRS2009. Doing so, would serve to sustain Trainz, especially in light of the current economic conditions.
Having used Trainz simulators almost from the beginning, I have a lot of experience with the product. My interest is in creating content. And having closely monitored the content creation environment in 2009, I'm not encouraged by what I've been reading at the TrainzDev site.
Content for TRS2009 is very hard to create. Auran only supports 3ds Max and that is a very expensive package. Moreover, there is scant information on how to creat things for 2009. I know, everyone will tell me that this product is evolving and getting better. Well, I don't the time sit around and fuss for years with trying to create something as simple as a tree.
Things have changed and so far as I can tell, only the truly hard-core creators are wearing themselves out trying to create content. Meanwhile, Auran reaps the benefits and does nothing in return to make content creation easier.
Personally, I really don't feel that the newest release is worth the money. Sure, if you like to just drive trains, then 2009 is great. But if you want to make things for this simulator, then it is a tough job. I strongly suspect that many have given up trying to make objects for the latest issue.
I have my doubts about 2009.
Auran expects me to support them and they expect me to spend $3000.00 on 3ds Max? Get real people.
By the way, Rail Simulator is undergoing a transformation.
Will Trainz be able to outcompete the other simulator manufacturers?
I realize that it costs money to hire software jockeys but at the same time, if Auran isn't focused on making things better for content creators, then they will continue to use stuff that was made years ago.
Have you ever wondered why TRS2009 has two modes? Compatibility and Native? Native means that they have no content to offer.
So, there it is.
You can state your opinion, as I'm sure you will. However, my time is worth more than a blind aliegence to a computer toy.
Cheers,
srude
