A thought . . .

Hello,

Recently, I got an e-mail from Auran, suggesting that I purchase TRS2009. Doing so, would serve to sustain Trainz, especially in light of the current economic conditions.

Having used Trainz simulators almost from the beginning, I have a lot of experience with the product. My interest is in creating content. And having closely monitored the content creation environment in 2009, I'm not encouraged by what I've been reading at the TrainzDev site.

Content for TRS2009 is very hard to create. Auran only supports 3ds Max and that is a very expensive package. Moreover, there is scant information on how to creat things for 2009. I know, everyone will tell me that this product is evolving and getting better. Well, I don't the time sit around and fuss for years with trying to create something as simple as a tree.

Things have changed and so far as I can tell, only the truly hard-core creators are wearing themselves out trying to create content. Meanwhile, Auran reaps the benefits and does nothing in return to make content creation easier.

Personally, I really don't feel that the newest release is worth the money. Sure, if you like to just drive trains, then 2009 is great. But if you want to make things for this simulator, then it is a tough job. I strongly suspect that many have given up trying to make objects for the latest issue.

I have my doubts about 2009.

Auran expects me to support them and they expect me to spend $3000.00 on 3ds Max? Get real people.

By the way, Rail Simulator is undergoing a transformation.

Will Trainz be able to outcompete the other simulator manufacturers?

I realize that it costs money to hire software jockeys but at the same time, if Auran isn't focused on making things better for content creators, then they will continue to use stuff that was made years ago.

Have you ever wondered why TRS2009 has two modes? Compatibility and Native? Native means that they have no content to offer.

So, there it is.

You can state your opinion, as I'm sure you will. However, my time is worth more than a blind aliegence to a computer toy.

Cheers,

srude

Actually, No. :n: Most People use an Excellent FREE Program called "GMax"

Actually, NO. Although G-max can still be used to create for Trainz (even 2009), Blender is recommended by the Trainz Dev Geniuses now.

I just finished a tongue in cheek post about the creators in the community not re-making all they're old content to 2009 standards, so I understand what you are talking about. I have no plans on updating anything I've made (collective sigh of relief from the community), and many others are of the same mind. I still think 2004/06 are the programs to create for right now.

Until the time that the Dev team posts a "sticky" that TS2009 is unrepairable and they made a HUGE mistake , I will patiently wait and in the meantime enjoy 06 .

I am possibly the last member who still believes ?

My thoughts --- ,DLR

I agree with your point that 2009 content creation is getting more complex. I'm not really a fan of that myself. However, if you purchase 2009, it doesn't instantly mean that you have to start creating objects to 2009 standards. Aside from the tree issue, most content created to 2004-06 standards works in '09 - even in native mode.

It certainly doesn't need to have normal maps etc. Older-style content may not have all of the "bells and whistles" of the new stuff, but I'm sure there are many in the community who would still appreciate it. The bottom line is that if you enjoy creating it, that's all that really matters.

Man, I hate to dispute anything posted by "The Big Fightin' D Man", but you know 2009 is NOT broken! 2009 is simply the most advanced piece of Trainz software, bar none, and when it's out of beta, it will be the Train Simulator of our dreams!

I only stay with 2006 because I don't have the intellectual brilliance required to tackle yet another Trainz Version!

I just say use 06. Much more stable, and TONS of content (freeware and payware)
There's no reason not to consider TC3 though, it's more stable than TRS2006. You also get the fixed steam physics, smoke effects and signalling system that is included in TS2009 without the hassle of using TS2009.

Nope. Until someone can give me a good reason to spend money on TS2009 over my perfectly good SP1 TRS2006, I won't even think about buying it. I've been taking the same approach to 09 as I have with Windows Vista. Until all (or almost all in Auran's case) of the bugs are ironed out, I won't even look at it. Hence the fact that I'm using XP right now. Anyway, back to the point. My TRS2006 crashes only about every once in 100 uses or so, and even then nothing is harmed. I've never had CMP crash, AND I use PaintShed all the time. TRS2006 is still the best in my opinion.

Correct me if I'm wrong Paul, but I thought I read that the signaling in 2009 is not the same as in TC3. I am under the impression that TC3 still has superior signal logic. If you don't know, I'm sure John Whelan will set me straight...:)

It's not the same, but TS2009 is a further development of the signalling system introduced in TC3. Both are a lot better than TRS2006.

Hmmmm, if you are still in love with TRS2004/06 young man, could you possibly consider making something new for us all then please.....

Your DLS layout Regional Passenger Transit 2005 was a major contribution, even though it is a snow-covered route, and I possibly won't play on it in the baking hot summer months, but, with your genial talent already very well established, could you possibly consider creating something similar.

Thank you.

Thanks for the encouragement Ex, but with my progressively worsening occular ailment, I'm not even sure I'll be able to post here much longer. My son does alot of stuff for me now, and I have my good and bad days, but that might be a bit much for me to tackle.

Feel free my friend, to alter it and release as you see fit, it pretty much was always an orphaned stepchild anyway! You have my permission to make your own version, and to upload it...I would be honored.

Really buying TRS2009 would only get me what I already have, only in a rather dodgy package. Oh plus a new loco and track. Comparing those two to similar items from original Trainz was alittle cunning to say the least. These new pieces are probably no better than free ware track and locos from USLW and RRmods.

I also had the email about buying 09, although I already have it and its registered. It came on the 1st of April so I assumed it was some sort of joke.

Yeah, I know how you feel Ed, I was born half blind and subsequently haven't been able to create anything of any value for the Trainz community. After 5 years I decided to attempt to put something back into this great hobby and am "reskinning" a Scottish route at the moment with the original author's permission, but, am finding it hard to concentrate for great lengths of time peering at my monitor trying to lay straight track and get the ground textures just right. I don't want to rush things as my eyes ache after a while and I am also a bit of a nitpicker and want to do a good job of it, and hopefully when it gets completed satisfactorily, I may take you up on your offer and endeavour to turn your winter route into a summer/fall one as we have plenty of trees and textures now available on the DLS, from our wonderful creators such as Dave Drake and Jankvis. Let me see how my current project pans out in a few month's time and I'll be in touch about any remake of your great layout.
