A ride on the PO&N - the Port Ogden & Northern

I was privileged to take a ride on the Port Ogden & Northern last week.

I joined the Class 40 at the locomotive depot at VanDenH. Charlie and Andy showed me their orders for that morning:

Charlie and Andy, Train Controller here.
You are working the north west sector this morning.
Finish fuelling your Class 40, then make up your train.
The coil wagons are loaded, ready and waiting at the Steel Mill.
You will need to load the container flats and also those two flat wagons with concrete beams over at Fabulous Fabricators.
Proceed west through Sundermeyer to Stevens.
Unload the steel coil in the workshop and the old 20 and 40ft containers in the yard.
Reload the flats with the refurbished tank containers.
Head south to Armstrong and attach the mineral wagons in the yard.
Head east over the Great Trestle to Newcastle.
Unload the mineral wagons at the minerals bins, the tank containers on the wharf, and the concrete beams at the general goods wharf.
Proceed to the loco depot and sign off.
You are authorised to travel at up to 50mph, except in yard areas where the normal limits apply.
You must give priority to all other trains.

While Charlie checked the locomotive, Andy finished fuelling:

It was then over to the container depot where we loaded 20 and 40ft containers. These were to be taken for refurbishment and repainting at Stevens:

Once the containers were loaded onto the flat wagons we picked up the rolls of steel coil at the Steel Mill:

Finally we loaded the concrete bridge beams onto the flat wagons at Fabulous Fabricators:

An impressive view of the steel works, heading west-bound out of VanDenH:

Followed by the steep climb up Sundermeyer Bank:

At Sundermeyer we crossed the first of several east-bound trains:

And unloaded the steel coil at the workshop at Stevens. The coil is used to refurbish and remanufacture containers:

We unloaded the containers and reloaded the flat wagons with brand new shiny tank containers:

The easiest part of the trip was the descent into Armstrong. Here we picked up the loaded mineral wagons standing in the yard:

With a trailing load of 600 tons it was a long hard slog up to the Grand Trestle:

But then it was an easy journey into Newcastle, where we unloaded the side dumping mineral wagons:

Unloaded the tank containers at the wharf:

And finally the concrete beams:

It was then over to the depot where Charlie and Andy booked off:

I'd like to thank the management of the PO&N for allowing me to ride their railway.

Phil-
Very nice series. The PO&N surely is a nice railroad, especially to give you a cabride!
Im just curious, where did you get those amazing side-dump hoppers?
Thanks.

ish, ess --

Thanks.

Hi Sean --

The side dumpers? The original is by Chester and can be downloaded from his web site. Several reskins are available from other Polish Trainz sites.

The one I've used in this session is slightly modified to alias to different bogeys and also has texture replacement so that it can be used to carry any bulk load. This variant, together with all the other items of rolling stock needed by the session, is contained in the archive file.

Here is that dumper used in a TRS2004 PO&N session:

The animation is excellent.
