A question for Bendorsey (or other bridge builders)

One of the issues I find I often face with bridges is the width of the portal to the length of the bridge. When using a bridge spline to obtain a particular length of bridge (for example a hump backed bridge), I sometimes find that the portal (or the bit which cars/trains pass under what ever its called) is often to narrow. This can be increased but at the cost of the overall length of the bridge increasing. Is there a way to alter the overall width of the portal without increasing the length of the bridge? Probably not but I was just wondering if anyone had come across this problem before?

When creating the spline, the portal could be made larger, which should result in (on average) the width of the portal to be more.
I fear this is not an option once the spline is already made as this is mesh related.

Again, I am happily proven wrong, but I fear I am not this time.

Anthony, the issue you describe is precisely why I try to utilise fixed bridges whenever possible. I could be wrong but everything I have by Ben is a scenery object rather than spline. He's made a couple of custom bridges for me, though these tend to be more substantial items than an overbridge in general.

I've been testing a few beta overbridges by one of the other creators and early results are very promising though again, these are fixed objects and created specifically for UK track spacing.

I use the track tool that adds a spline point on the bridge which will change the underside dimensions if they do not fit in the space.

I had pretty much guessed that a spline is not going to work where I want it. Unfortunately I cant find anything suitable on a static bridge. The bridge in question is basically a hump backed bridge which used to span 3 tracks (UK track spacing). Now though it only spans 2 tracks. You can see a couple of images of the bridge in question on this website: http://www.roscalen.com/signals/DroitwichSpa/ (third image down and again near the bottom of the page).
The real issue I guess is that the top of the bridge does not span evenly. Looking at the bridge from the station - the left hand side of the bridge is much shorter than the right hand side of the bridge. This is because of the way the road across the top of it enters and leaves the bridge, but basically the road on the left hand side curves sharply back to the station. Whereas the right hand side goes a little further before the road turns towards the station. The reason behind it was because the original station buildings used to be at a higher level on the right hand side next to the bridge. Nowadays it is at platform hight.
If anyone can suggest a bridge that might fit Id appreciate it. Though I have to say I have tried several. Anyway thanks for the help folk.

My advice is to PM Ben and ask him if he'd be interested. His turnaround time is pretty phenomenal if you can give him some basic dimensions and an idea of the texture. Better still, he's the consummate gentleman and a pleasure to deal with. As an example, I asked him if he would do the Drogheda viaduct which, to me at least, is quite complex in being stone arch and girder construction. He had 4 different versions out in about a week if I recall.

He's the go to man for a custom built bridge.

Hi AntonyVW:

Generally speaking most bridges I make can't be made as splines due to the nature of how splines are made. They can only consist of one 1 or 3 parts and certain size restrictions apply. Fixed bridges on the other hand can be made to whatever specs are necessary.

I took a peek at the link and from what little I see I can easily make it for you but need more info and better pictures.
1. Photos of the overall span, individual spans, ends, and roadway (I think its a highway bridge).
2. Basic dimensions such as overall length, length of the individual spans, width, height above the rails etc.

Hi Ben,
Thanks for the offer. I had hoped to solve the issue with something that was already available but the comments above suggested that that was not going to happen, so I appreciate your offer. Getting the photos should not be a problem, though I'm not so sure on getting the measurements. I can certainly measure the top of the bridge but getting the dimensions of the arch will prove more difficult. But ever the optimist I will see what can be achieved.

I often get requests from folks with the same problem. If there is something in the photo with known dimensions I can often apply a bit of ratio-n-proportion and come up with reasonably close measurements.

Photos are best from as close to the side as possible. Not only does it give me a better chance at ratio-n-proportion it sometimes allows me to take textures from the (color) photos.

Ben

G'day AntonyVW,

...had Ben not stepped up to the plate, I would have offered to help, here. Don't forget, Ben, that much information can be gleaned from Google Earth but as this image from that source shows..

...there are two bridges here, neither of which actually 'fit' to the description Antony has provided of the associated streets/roads. So, which is the one to which you refer, Antony?
