A pair of newbie questions

Simple newbie question maybe, but I couldn't find it in the manual, although I haven't finished reading it yet: can routes be printed out? A physical map would be oh so much easier to follow.

And another, perhaps tougher querie: can junctions be renamed? If so, how?

Simple answers.
1: Not that I know of. You might be able to with TrainzMap, but I just don't know.
2: Yes! Just go into Surveyor. Then open the track tab. Go into the track objects tab (marked by a level crossing light icon or something, you should know what I mean ;)). Then click the ? icon in the track objects tab, and click the junction. A little pop up box will appear. The little bar inside the box has the name of the junction in. Click inside the box, then you can type and remove text. :D

newbie questions

Thanks for the quick response, James. This program is so much deeper than one might originally think!

Bet you know the answer to this one, too, or at least correct me if I'm wrong. I get the impression that a train can service an industry, but not one categorized as "building", or am I off base?

My conclusion came from the fact that one can edit commodities of "industry" businesses, but those under "building" have only the name as an editable property.

What is the point of a trackside building that can't be served by the railroad. Case in point is the grain elevator in the "buildings" section. Why is this not in the "industry" section, so we can decide what grain(s) it stores, thus becoming a point on our RR that we can move those nifty covered hoppers?

The correct response to your question on printing out a map of a route is both yes and no. It depends on the version of Trainz that you have. TrainzMap will print maps of routes in TRS2006 and I've also used it in TRS2004 routes. I don't believe that TrainzMap will work on versions after 2006, but I haven't tried it yet.

That sounds good, as I have both the '04 and '06 versions (currently running just the '06 on my laptop). I will have to take a look when I get off work. Thanks.

Buildings can be used as an industry if you place an industry track alongside, such as the built in 'basic industry'. You just won't see any products increase or decrease at the industry but if your rollingstock is industry enabled you will see them load or unload. Industry buildings were generally made for older versions of Trainz which did not have visible loading and unloading properties.

I was able to get Trainzmap to work in a limited way with TS'09. I tried it with TS'10, and haven't had any luck yet. What a terrible loss!!! I sure there was a program that worked like Trainzmap for TS'10 (and beyond).

I was able to open mine (an '06 route) in Trainzmap, but to print it would have taken up more than 20 pages. So printing them doesn't look terribly feasible, but at least it let me see the whole shebang on one screen, so it still is a useful tool, which is more than I can say for Content Manager Plus :(

Just to add to bill69's post.
There are lots of track for specific industries, so you need these buildings to make it look as realistic as possible, the more the better, using industry kuids for background scenery is not an option because it will clog up the, drive to list, with useless industry items.
