A few questions for a longtime user

Simply defeated
Hi there.

I've been a longtime user of Trainz, all the way back to TRS2004 from Dec 2003. My graphic card finally bit the dust on my first Alienware from 2011 and my TRS 2010 continually crashes but the content manager for TRS 2010 works just fine.

So now I have moved here with a new computer and have purchased and installed Train 2022 PE (I think) from the Trainz DLC or DLS, not sure what it's called now. It's not a monthly subscription if that helps.

Q#1- Are there serial numbers that need to be registered?

I tried to look up this question before asking, but no affirmative response was given to another individual with a similar query. There's a page under My Trainz called "Manage Serial Numbers". I have all my previous versions registered from 04 to 12. I am just wondering where I would need to look. I had no problems installing the game and I was prompted to enter my username and pw to validate my purchase. So far everything is working, but I wouldn't know where to look to supply my serial number to the Manage Serial Numbers page.

Q#2- In Surveyor #1 (not the fancy upgraded version 2) - How do I see the grey grid? The game assigned a green texture and when I found the buttons to add ground (empty baseboards) it added baseboards with that green texture already applied. I'm used to building my routes with blank grey baseboards so I can see how the tracks (I actually used fixed track segments for my spacing preferences). Is there some kind of toggle that I need to kick on/off?

I may have additional questions but that's all I have at the moment.

I have been away from Trainz and content creating since I suffered a stroke a couple of years ago.

HI rgcx! There are no serial numbers for TRS22, it just uses your valid login. The grey grid was replaced with the green one for default, so when working on routes you want to start with a region that says it is a grid region. Several people have made them. Otherwise, I think you have to replace with the original grid texture. I think you can bulk replace with Surveyor1, but Surveyor 2.0 has bulk replace issues at this time. Great to see your post! Sorry to hear about your stroke, but glad to see you have recovered enough to come back to us!

Here's a few more Q's

a. Can weather and gameplay time/rate be adjusted while in driver mode?

In TRS 2010 there was a quick drive rule enabled and you could always drop the menu down and change time, time rate and weather conditions. Very handy if you were tired of stormy conditions or loathed driving at night. At night you could be roaming (view) and wander far away from the train. Lol

b. This question involves driver commands. Is there a consensus about which driver commands helps drivers make it to track marks without getting stuck or backing up?

I notice that there's drive to/ drive via and navigate to/ navigate via. In TRS 2010, the clear winner was the navigate to. I had very few hiccups using this in TRS 2010. However, today in 22PE I had more trains going in reverse and lining itself into dead end spurs before reversing to go the correct way. I was using navigate to and navigate via commands. I rechecked the layout twice to make sure that I didn't have a directional marker facing the wrong way.

While I'm a novice in 22 PE, I know from years of making routes, the AI drivers need frequent track markers, directional markers to keep them from backing up if the route ahead. I also know that AI drivers need frequent turnouts to take control of. So I have turnouts every 3 to 4 miles on the double track round and round style layout.

c. Has anyone used the randomly placed scenery objects to fill up a layout?

I haven't tried it yet as I seem to be more than adept screwing up layouts so far.

Part answer to a.

I use 'Use System Time' rule to match TRS time of day to local time of day. You can watch the shadows move during a session (Daylight only ;).

Unfortunately, TRS has no simple means of returning to your train. A simple RClick on the current driver portrait would be nice. (Your call N3V)

Part answer to b.
'Drive to/via' commands will take the shortest route to the next 'location' marker and will queue waiting blocking trains to clear.
'Navigate to/via' will calculate and try all possible routes including backing out to 'go around' blocking trains. I think there is a 'Least Cost' approach applied here.

Unfortunately, there is a known bug in 123794 (and others ?) which is allowing 'Drive to' commands to function like 'Navigate to' and will sometimes remove the 'Driver' leaving driverless trains. 'Continue Schedule' often disappears from the CTRL+RClick Train menu. You can 'Program' a key, I use TAB, to 'Continue Schedule' which works most of the time.

I try to restrict the number of junctions between 'Locations' to 3 or less as current Trainz logic has a hard time with more (particularly if it is 'busy' or TRS has to switch them). I also place 'location' marks, so they offer no 'alternate path' to reach them. (barring a backout with 'Navigate to/via')

In my experience 'Priority' and 'Directional' marks work around 95% of the time. 'Directional' markers are directionally sensitive and need to point against the travel you want barred as you stated. You can experiment with the 'Force Signal On' asset, but it can lock signals on red if it is later deleted.

As a rule of thumb, I align junctions for through traffic. I also align junctions from dual track to single with the converging junctions needing switching and the diverging not.

a. Can weather and gameplay time/rate be adjusted while in driver mode?

In TRS22PE you can adjust both the weather and time while in Driver mode. In the Windows Menu (at the top of the screen and 2nd from the right) click (check ON) the Session Options palette. You can then select a new weather condition and its level of changeability. The current session time can also be changed by moving the hand on the clock dial but this will not give you a high degree of accuracy.

More details on using the new Surveyor 2.0 palettes in both Driver and Surveyor can be found on the Trainz Wiki at How_to_Use_S20_Palettes
