A couple of newbie questions

Hi...

I'm new to Trainz....I mean totally new, I've never touched any version of the sim until a couple of weeks ago so please go easy with any answers :hehe:

I have a couple of questions that I would be grateful to anyone that would be kind enough to help me with ?

Firstly...I've looked high and low and can't believe I can't find a lumberjack anywhere. I've tried typing 'lumberjack, forester, woodsman, logsmith, chopper, man with chopper, man with chainsaw, mad man in chainsaw horror, wood cutter, log cutter and of course....tree surgeon' but to no avail.
Please, does anyone know where I could find a guy with a big saw ?

Secondly...if you download an item and find it to have missing(not on DLS) dependancies or broken dependancies...is there any other way to repair/obtain these ?
Almost everything I have downloaded so far is in this state...I get the impression from googling etc that alot of this content contains files that are primative to 2010 edition. I mean I feel like if you have used trainz for years and have collected content, then you're ok. But if you have only just started out like I have then...how do I catch up ?
I have downloaded loads of routes and not one of them works. The latest was 'ECML central'. I really wanted to try this as I'm English and really enjoyed driving the 'York to Kingscross' route that came built into the game but no...I have two broken dependancies:-
Faulty: MB 6-lane yard left
Faulty: MB 6-lane yard right
...and when I try to run it...my Trainz crashes. As I say...when I googled the kuid...I found talk of 'these were included in the orignal sp3' or something along these lines.

This is my third night of downloading and so far, the only things I have downloaded that are any use to me are...a steam train that has no bloody brakes, a chainsaw sound and a badged up Aldi truck :o

Thirdly...I have a tab in content manager called 'Out Of Date'. This contains literally hundreds of files that all say 'Update available'. Am I right in thinking that this list basically contains content I have installed that has an update available and to be prim and proper...I have to multi select all of these and drag um to download manager and wait for maybe days at 3kps for them to download ?

Thanks in advance for any help...

At the back of my mind OverlordNZ may have created some animated lumberjacks. Download Murchison without the payware and I'm fairly certain there are some there.

Grab a First Class ticket if you are going to do any serious downloading, its worth the money.

Any content under my kuid 86627 should work fine in TS2010. If it doesn't let me know. Any warnings can generally be ignored in TS2010.

This thread should help you find a few UK layouts. http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=3301&highlight=layouts

A browse through the web site under my name should help you find a few things as well.

Welcome to Trainz, TS2010 means that most steam locos needed to be updated, so aim for ones that are TC3 and above.

Welcome aboard Mart.

This game is one of the most addictive devised by man.

Mart1001,

Welcome to the world of trainz.

A couple things I discovered which I believe are worth sharing.

1: When I first got the game I downloaded everything in sight before my 7 day First Class Ticket expired. That was a bad move as I also ran into many routes/sessions that did not work. Solution was to delete everything and reinstall the game.

I download very little now and I don't download anything else until my last downloaded asset/route/session either works, I can fix it or it gets deleted.

Learning to use the Content Manager, especially using the many search parameters ie faulty/missing assets is a must.

2: My second big mistake was with the out of date assets. My great mission to update all of them opened many cans of worms. Solution was to delete everything and reinstall the game.

Now I simply disregard out of date items. I'm sure in the future I'll work on a better plan of attack there.

3: Find that one route which offers the best of your interests, learn where your favorite industries are (I mostly like passenger trains, mostly) and develop your own sessions, believe me, running your own sessions is the real ticket to fun. Currently I'm playing with the Razorback 6.3 route which (if I'm using Content Manager correctly) uses all 2010 built-in assets and thus has no missing assets and works perfect.

If you follow a few guidelines you will get the most pleasure from the game. When I first got this game I hated it and regretted the money spent, but now I'm totally addicted. Even purchased a 3 month First Class Ticket to get those rare downloads at full speed.

But now I've got to run, there be some peeps in Columbia need to get to work and the diesel fuel ain't gonna levitate it's way from the Gabledon Refinery to Hunter.

Welcome to the crazy world of Trainz, so addictive I wonder why so many people have time to post in these forums !!

Thanks for the help guys...

rweber95
Thanks mate...and these are built in all this time eh LOL. I can't believe they were listed under the only name I did'nt try....'logger'.

RPearson and barn700
Thanks for the welcome guys. I am already totally addicted. I just love driving around my route and passing trains on route to pickup logs or deliver lumber etc that I have carefully plotted their route and I can't help but sound my horn to them as I pass ROFL.

Thanks William for taking the time over these tips. I have already felt like reinstalling a few times as I feel I have downloaded a load of files with errors and being the sort of person that likes to maintain my computer to the highest of health...well.
But I'm gonna stick with it for the moment cause I'm sure I'll learn how to scrap the trash sort of thing eventually.
I think I'll stick with my 3kps for the moment too otherwise I feel I could end up in a right mess as you say. 3kps reminds me of my pre 2000 days when a download was worth gold compared to today which I think will help me to choose my downloads carefully...again, as you say.

Thanks for your help John. I checked 'OverlordNZ' content and couldn't find the asset you were talking of but I did download his construction house and logging camp bunkhouse but they all contain errors:-
Error: The Tag '--' is not permitted within a container of type 'scenery'.
Error: Unable to load primary texture 'roof2.tga' for texture file 'roof2.texture.txt'.

Anyway...I checked your content and it's really good. I love some of your wagons and your terrace houses are perfect for my route. I downloaded the following items:-
BR Palvan, Miss Conyers, Stage coach, GWR confllat, Albert street terrace, King tiger and a couple of your Garden gates.
Everything worked with exception to GWR conflat which gave a broken dependancy:-
Faulty: LMS Tank Chlorine (which I think belongs to Dave_Westwood ?)
Also...I couldn't see King Tiger anywhere in my surveyor list's ?

Thanks again guys...

Mart.

AWWWWW So that's why my trs 2006 is out of whack.......

Just to update...

Since I posted above...the 'LMS Tank Chlorine' has suddenly corrected itself and is'nt showing any errors...wierd.
It's no longer a broken dependancy in GWR conflat though conflat is now showing the following error/warning:-

Warning: Tag 'bluestar_coupler' in the container 'traincar' is obsolete.
Warning: Tag 'bluestar_brake' in the container 'traincar' is obsolete.
Error: Binary conversion failed for texture resource 'asset_shadow/black.texture.txt'.
Error: Binary conversion failed for texture resource 'asset_shadow/conflat.texture.txt'.
