254 Shades of Grey

No, I am not purporting to be a sexual athlete! I am just proposing to make a displacement map; from pure black to pure white with 254 shades of grey between. I am assuming that every shade represents a fixed increase in height. If I am right, can anyone tell me what that interval might be?

It depends on the Threshold (Scale) setting. Try it and see. Select a region that is integral fraction of 256x256, so that you can measure the height at grid lines to see what the height difference is for the different threshhold settings. When you create your gradient, make sure you choose 'Linear' - it is not always the default.
