Fellow Members ,

You have been very helpful in the past and I now have two new questions :

Followed the thread regarding defraging and how some believe it causes unnecessary wear on the HD , some even stated defraging was all hype ?
I have made my own conclussions from the thread and continue doing what I consider correct .
My 1st question is , what about Ccleaner , I run it daily after my visit to the web . Is this OK , or am I putting undo wear on the HD ?

My 2nd question is , Windows continually wants to update , I tick fine , do what you want , Windows goes through it's updating process , tells me to restart ! When I return , Windows wants to run the same update again , I tried contacting Billy Gates at his home phone number , he does not answer !
Is there a way of disrupting this apparent nonproductive cycle ?

Thanks in advance --- ,dave

I have used CCleaner for years in much the same fashion, and have not experienced any indications that it is "wearing" my HD.
I defrag occasionally with the same results.

You can change your settings on the updater to only download the updates you select.

Try going in an Admin account then going to Windows update on the Microsoft site and getting them mannully. Hopefully that will work.

If not be aware some Malware attempts to disable Windows update to protect itself. Reinstalling the operating system should clear your system.

Thanks Ed and John ,

I will try both suggestion regarding the reoccuring updates and post back .

I would recommend going into the control panel, choose the windows update, then change the settings to allow you to choose what you want downloaded and installed. I usually look at all the updates and if I don't know about one ,I'll read up on it before I download it, sometime the update is for something that you may not even have on your computer. Example, updates for microsoft office ,I dont have that on my comp so Im not going to download the update.
RE CCleaner, I use that also and have not had any trouble, my thinking is its easier and less work to find a file in a neat and tidy file cabinet then searching many times over in a unorganized one. Your hard drive is just like a filing cabinet. Keep it organized, less problems.

Unwanted updates

Dave, I use the non-automatic (custom selection) option for auto update, then when I get notification that updates are availible I usually un-check those that I don't want and then let the installation run. I keep a list of those any that fail and next time un-check those. When I exit the installation when it completes, it complains that I have not installed all of them and I check the box for no further notification of those.

Thanks guys for the info -

After trying all/most of the ideas I am still getting the ' updates are ready ' icon appearing in the task bar and the pop up message . Irving's suggestion is the method I am using , but it appears the annoying updates are being stored somewhere , and are present at each 'cold boot' and reappear immediately after I tick install , untick all the updates , tick do not show again . 30 seconds later , they appear again . Very annoying !!

anyother thoughts are welcome , --- ,dave

My recommendation at this point would be to reinstall the operating system. It sounds like something some where is corrupt either Malware or the fridge came on when you were writing to the hard drive and you don't have a UPS to give brown out protection on the PC.

Thanks again John ,

At this point , I can only assume that you are correct .
I am reluctant to reinstall , I am going to continue with the annoyance until a time when a reinstall is of more importance . My experience is that it will happen , soon(tm) !
FYI - I did try a restore but no luck !

These cleaning utilties are great, and do save a lot of time, however I have found that sometimes they will break certain functions particularly if you let them clean the registry.

I use Advanced System Care, which does the same thing. They have an option in their registry cleaning portion to uncheck program that you don't want to be "fixed". Without doing this, I errantly lost some configuration files to one of my graphics programs I use. This was a minor annoyance, which resulted in preferences being lost, but none the less it proves how dangerous these programs can be to your computer if you just click on the go button.

I'm not sure about CC Cleaner, because the last time I used it was on Windows 98 Plus. Have you looked around at any settings that can be set so it doesn't munge certain functions?

Just a thought on this.

JCitron ,

Thanks for your input and time to post .
Ccleaner has basically the same options that you mention , one can tick and/or untick folders to clean . Mine are set at a minimum , temporaty files , temporary history files , etc.
Would it help anyone to help me with the annoying update problem , if I show what I have ticked in Ccleaner ?

I have been using CCleaner for a number of years, update and run it weekly.
No problems at all with any of its functions.
Only thing I realised was to let it do its default settings when first installed then slowly take a look at the tick boxes and determine what they do before using them.:mop:
