Updating DirectX 9.0c- how to do it

downloading

I have no problem downloading on 9 or 10 but what I do is download the content onto 09 then transfer it to 10

I think you may have posted in the wrong thread - this one is specifically about updating DirectX, and dealing with DirectX update problems.

If it is indeed related to DirectX, further information is needed.

Hi Shane

Have just tried again and got same for the 1st option. However for whatever reason the redist version appears to have gone thru this time though I didn't get a confirmation message. A file search shows DirectX_Jun2010_redist.exe is now in my C:/Users/Bob/Download folder. Does this mean problem resolved? Will see if any noticeable difference to my graphics but my first impression is no difference.

Bob

You will need to run that file mentioned in your last post (if you haven't already), then specify a folder (as per the instructions in the first post) to extract the files to.

Once that is done, there will be a file in there called dxsetup.exe - this is the main setup file.

Shane

Just to let users know - an update to DirectX has been released (18/04/2011), and can be downloaded via the link(s) on the first post.

Looking at it, it is a new update, as the version numbers/dates on both the redist and the web install are the same.

Shane

NOTE: Windows XP with no service packs or just SP1, and Windows Server 2003 with no service packs are not supported by DirectX from the June 2010 release.

If you encounter a Side-By-Side error, re-download the file.

If you encounter the error 'A cabinet file is necessary for installation and cannot be trusted', follow the instructions at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/directx/aa937789.aspx#issues.

Instruction

I've just had a read of that thread - very interesting information in it (somewhere in it it actually refers to 'installing' DirectX 9 not 'updating' it on Windows 7.

Just out of interest, do you think my instructions given in the first post are OK?

Shane

Shane your instructions are perfect. I spent a full day trying to update TS 2010 (just got it with TS 12, but tried installing TS2010 first) and the update was stopping in the middle. I bought this new computer 2 weeks ago and did not install any game in it so DX9 was never installed or updated. I know I have DX11 on the machine when i ask for dxdiag. After reading your post I did the redist version and got it fixed right away. The only thing is that dxdiag only show the DX11 stuff. Is there is a way to find out about the DX9? I am using Windows 7 home premium (64 bit) service pack 1.
Thanks, Rene

The only way of checking for DirectX 9, apart from attempting an update, is to look in c:\Windows\SysWOW64\ for files with the name d3dx*_##.dll.

(The * indicates the DirectX version - 9,10,or 11, and the ## relates to the version number - the current highest is 43)

I recently bought a new HD and installed Windows 7 on it, not that there was any thing wrong with my old drive. I just hated Vista that was on it, and the easiest way to up grade was with a new HD. Of course I had to re-install my programs, directX 10 came with Vista, and DirectX 11 with WIn 7. I had already in stalled DirectX 9 so I did not see any reason to do so again. But I kept having trouble with trainz 9 Which I had installed the service packs up to build 41844. I was afraid to install the last one because so many people were having trouble with it. After reading your post about DirectX 9, I re-installed it, and the troubles were gone, and I also installed the last patch bring the build to 44653. So far TS 2009 is running fine. I am having trouble with TRS 2004, and don't know what is causing it.

I have a bugs thread in the TS2009 forum (TS2009 SP4:Bugs thread) if you do run into any of the bugs.

As for the TRS2004 issue, you may need to create a new thread in the TRS2004 forum if you haven't already.

Meanwhile, it's good to see that your DirectX is working well at the moment after reinstalling it.

hello all...

i did too experience this issue. after searching the internet i came up with this thread direct me to microsoft download page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads [...] laylang=en

its a 281kb file that will download the rest of the installation file. after download it will selfinstall (or u will need to install it, i dont remember) and it will install all the missing DLL files.

after this, all games r running perfectly on my windows 7 64bit OS.

good luck

Dude the link in your sig comes up (not surprisingly) as blocked by Trend Anti Virus. Is this forum really the place for that kind of stuff?

It's good to see another user sucessfully update their DirectX.

A couple of notes though (the second note applies specifically to elviacannon)

1.I strongly advise not copying/pasting the links from the first post, as the forum software has done something to them to make them smaller, clicking them still works though, or using Copy Shortcut.
2.Elviacannon, as I advised you in a previous post, do not post advertising links in your posts - it is against the Code of Conduct. (If you are wondering about my link, that is actually not an advertising link, it is a link to my tutorial website)

I have been running TS2010 for some time on Windows7 x64 (and previously on Vista x64) quite happily. A recent disk crash required a new hard disk and reinstallation of Windows 7, following which all my other files and data, including TS2010 (Build 44088), were restored from a backup disk.
TS2010 now refuses to open (unless I select the OpenGL option) because DirectX 9 is not installed. However Content Manager refuses to open, reporting:
"ContentManager.exe - Application Error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application."

Is this also related to DirectX?

I have just spent 2 weeks trying to get DirectX 9 to load (following all the hints I can find in your forums and elsewhere on the internet) but to no avail. The redist download appears to complete, but there is no "Done" message, and subsequently Trainz does not recognise its existence, and try as I might, the existence of DirectX 11 blocks the websetup version.

I have tried a clean install of TS2010, but no change. So are there any hints as to the next step?

Have you tried the Microsoft installer?

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

or

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=8109

You may also glean some clues from here Microsoft Knowledge Base article 971644.

I would not try downloading DirectX from any other sites. Microsoft is the only veryfiable source IMHO. I apologise if these links have been suggested before or you have tried them already.

If you still cannot get anything to install or still appears not to work, you can always try the MSDN forums and ask in there for suggestions. Usually Microsoft folks get involved when others cannot answer.

The other thing you can try is DXDiag.exe - Just run this from the start menu. If it cannot be found then you have a real problem. DXDiag will report what is installed. If it all seems OK then perhaps it may be worth passing the details on here and see if anyone else can help.

As a side note DirectX11 usually sits on top of of 9.0c and 10 and all 3 versions are "usually" available (on later the later OS). All similar to develop in, but I prefer 9.0c

Best of luck!

Kess

Also, did you follow the full process in the first post of this thread?

It is clear enough for most.

It's a two part process for redistributable installs, and both parts must be done.

Shane

EDIT: Kessica, I keep links for updating DirectX in the first post in this thread.

DX9 ................

First of all, thanks to Kess and Shane for responding (which is more than the Helpdesk has so far - I asked them about it some days earlier).

I tried both both options from Shane's original posting some time ago - following instructions to the letter. I tried them again, but no luck.

I also tried Kess' suggestions, but again no luck. I went through to the Microsoft Knowledge base as suggested and followed on from there, but none of the suggestions I saw there or on relevant links worked either.

dxdiag shows only DX11 as being installed (as does another useful bit of software called SIW) - although checking in the relevant Windows folder shows DX9 files to be present.

Frankly I've spent too much time on this already. My time costs more than the latest version of Trainz so perhaps I'll just move on to that - or does that also need a backdated version of DirectX?

As the creator of this thread, I will see if I can assist you further.

Note that any of the later versions of Trainz will require DirectX 9.0C.

I will quote the stages in question - I need to check which ones you have completed, as you should get a confirmation message at the end of the redistributable or web install updates.

1. Click the link above (just under the Redist version heading), then click Download on the page that appears.
2. A File Download box will appear:Click Save then save it to the desktop (it is nearly 100MB worth of file, so it may take a while on a slow connection).

--If this is not the Trainz system, you will need to copy the DirectX redistributable just downloaded over to the Trainz system at this point-

3.Create a folder on the desktop of the system running Trainz (which may or may not be the same system with the internet connection) for the DirectX installation files.
4.Run the file, selecting the folder you just created when asked where you want to extract the files to (make sure it's to the folder you created)
5.Open the folder you created, then run the dxsetup.exe file inside (there will be a load of .cab files, a few other files, and the dxsetup.exe file)
6. An installation wizard will then appear: click to accept the license agreement then click Next.
7. The next screen will then inform of what will be installed - click Next.
8. The update will start automatically: click Finish when it is done. The update is now complete.

Can I verify that you have done all 8 stages?

Shane

DX9

OK will try again. Only one thing - I suppose I have to reveal my total lack of comprehension of all things computer and ask what you mean by "not the same system as the internet system." As far as I know I have just one system........................ .
