I am a new Trainz user moving up from MSTS scenario creation. I am looking into modeling for trainz and wanted some tips and the following information.

Suggested:
Programs
Guides on modeling with the programs.
How to export into trainz content.
And other tips.

All help appreciated.

Sorry if a sticky is caused, and I do prefer great graphics and simplicity.

Excellent question...
If it's possible to use Blender3D, which I am fairly good at, Im in!
Let's hope someone replies

To create new models use one of the following:
- 3dsMax (expensive at about $5k cdn)
- Blender (free and very powerful)
- GMax (free, no longer supported but the developer, limited in that it does not do baked normals and large files tend to corrupt)

Others have used different tools but they are not recommended to due the complexity of getting them into the game. Some are extremely easy to use but create too many polys and still have to be imported into one of the three above to texture the item.

As mentioned in the previous post, look at Paul Hobbs site (44090) for extremely good tutorials on both GMax and Blender. He has references to get everything you need.

If you are interested in re-skinning use any paint program that will allow you to save an uncompressed TGA file and search the forums. This has been addressed quite thoroughly in terms I could never improve on.
