Do you live near a railyard(s)?

Bay Area

The closest yard to me is newark
Santa Clara used to have a yard but its closed
Oakland is big too
Roseville is the largest hump yard and everything

I used to live about 2 miles from the Lawrence yard in Lawerence, MA. I would go down to Andover Street and watch the trains when I was on vacation or on a lazy summer afternoon. An elderly lady used to come out of one of the nearby houses and talk to me. One day she gave me some homemade ice tea!

There was a mix of locals, commuter trains, some run throughs, pooled power runs, and some originating freights.

Unfortunately due to the attitude of the current rail line owners, a lot of this traffic has dried up over the years. This was well before the economy crashed. The yard is still there, but the amount of freight in it pales compared to only 10 years ago.

WNC Yards

My town, Lenoir used to have a yard up untill the 1970s, it had 7 tracks (Nothing Special). Now it has only 3 abandoned tracks, including the line that went through here:'( ! Now the nearest yard I live near is the NS Oyama yard in Hickory, It has 8 tracks at it's widest.

I occasionaly go to the NS Asheville yard that has around 16 tracks.
The Clinchfield Erwin yard has around 20 tracks in some places

In my home city we have several rail yards
Walker yard is the main Canadian National Hub for Western Canada, if you scroll left and right over the satellite maps see below you will see that the Yard extends the entire length of the city with breaks of 4 track mainline befor opening up again into another yard.

Canadian Pacific also has two yards

I live near the Walker yard and it gets sometimes very loud particularly on a calm night when they are using the Hump to sort rail cars.

We also have a large LRV system with the garage seen here:

houston has a bunch (surrounding areas)

englewood and settegast are the main ones

other yards in the area include:

eureka, hardy street (RIP), basin, booth, peirce, lloyd, mk yard, coady, mont belvieu, cove rd, robinson, old dayton, angleton, freeport

those are all UPRR

bnsf has a yard at dayton, new and old south yards, mykawa yard and probably some others.

then there are the little shortlines/scab outfits whose number of yards i will simply just say that its alot.

here in columbia sc we actually have two rail yards.
The Norfolk Southern Andrews yard and the CSX Transportation Cayce yard.

Train watching is not advised at Andrews as they will have Columbia police escort you off the property. The CSX yard in Cayce however is very railfriendly, and your close to the action with several good viewing point.

Lastly I have both modeled in a route I'm currently working on.

Does small yards count? the yard where i live, in northern california, it has about 4 tracks and a few switches. i used to go to a model railroad club for 3 years and we hada front row seat of all the action since the tracks were only 30 feet away. The UP heritage locomotives pass through every once in a while. fun stuff.

Nearby Yards

I live not only near a yard, but the main line is only a block from my house. The Yard is the Conrail Trainer Yard in Trainer, Pennsylvania along the Conrail Chester Secondary (named after my home town). The yard is an ex-Pennsylvania Railroad yard and Penn Central used it, then Conrail now Conrail Shared Assets Operations, Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation use the yard for locals, it stretches from Booth Street (here in Chester) to just into Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania. (behind some oil refineries) Only problem is, I live near a 5 lane highway (Pennsylvania State Route 291). But, at Highland Avenue which is five blocks over, I can walk across it (thanks to a light) and then walk along Front Street. (which follows the line to the yard). Then, there's a small yard along the NEC used for covered hoppers (occasionally tank cars), because of Fisher Tank. (a boat part place, I believe.) So, I live near two plus one in Eddystone, Pennsylvania for the Eddystone Power Plant. HOW COOL IS THAT!!!

the cosest on to me is a one by by a railroad called tacoma rail and it is for a lumber that they use. i dont go by there much though and id guess maybe 3-4 tracks for storage and an abandoned line too. the next closest would be either the one in a town called fife, or the one in tacoma, with maybe 20-30 tracks and station

Just wondering if you live near one, or there's one in your town or city. Sadly, I don't live near one nor does my town has ever had a railroad track. But I do go to the Linwood Yard in Linwood,NC which has a good I say 35 tracks. I've been to the one in Charlotte, IT'S HUGE at least 50 tracks, Glenwood Yard in Raleigh, and the one in Roanoke,VA.

So tell me the name of it, and if you can an estimated number of tracks, switches, etc.
Norfolk Southern's Down Town Columbus GA Yard. only a 10 min ride. ^^

I used to live around Union Pacific's Bailey Yard. :'( But, I now live near Union Pacific's Yard near Los Angeles. :) I see a whole bunch of Union Pacific power, in and around the yard.

Not a yard but live very close to this. Their mainline runs against the back of my property and I own an old Pennsy "flop house" train crews used. Comes complete with his and hers out houses.

Had a great time and got plenty of photos and videos last year of the Nickel Plate 484. Also get to watch the old Erie Lackawanna S run all summer long.

G'day!

I have a small single line running past my house. Only Metro trains though. Except about a few k's away, There is probably on eof the biggest railyards in South Australia, also home to the Islington Railworks.

Cheers! :)

Jake.

Living in DFW, there are alot of railyards. Ex- Texas & Pacific yard that UP uses. The old Sante Fe yard right near that that is never realy used anymore. Then there is the new one north of Ft.Worth(Which I cant think of the name right now). Then there are always all the Shortline yards.
